Fleeing vehicle strikes sedan, killing its driver

Press release from Gainesville Police Department

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On Friday, July 26, at approximately 6:40 p.m., officers of the Gainesville Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for numerous traffic violations. The vehicle, a grey Infiniti sedan, came to a stop and, as officers approached, fled the area at a high rate of speed. The officers did not pursue the vehicle.

The Infiniti traveled westbound on NW 10th Avenue at a high rate of speed. At the intersection of NW 10th Avenue and NW 6th Street, the Infiniti struck another vehicle.

Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies in an unmarked vehicle and officers of the Gainesville Police Department rendered aid to multiple injured persons on scene. The driver of the Infiniti fled the area on foot and was apprehended a short time later by members of ASO and a GPD K-9 team. Three passengers in the Infiniti were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the other vehicle (a red Dodge sedan) was killed.

This incident is currently an open and active investigation. More information will be provided when available.

Updated July 27: More information on this arrest is available here.

  • The amount of traffic accidents in this city is completely out of control.

    • No, its the drivers of the vehicles that are out of control ! We should ban cars huh ?

    • I don’t think this really qualified as an accident. More like homicide.

I hope the driver that tried to flee is charged with murder and spends the rest of thier life in prison.

      • Most of them are related to City commissioners, city officials, and police officials!

      • Can’t help but wonder if any of our esteemed local accident attorneys will be lining up to file a civil suit against the driver.

My guess would be “no” since it’s likely illicit monies are all the defendant would have at their disposal. (Read – no money for them)

    • This one comes down to refusal to prosecute or give more than a slap on the wrist by the Democrats in the local justice system.

      • Interesting you blame it on Democrats when current (and former) State Attorney is Republican–elected by the voters of the entire 8th Circuit which includes the Trump/DeSantis loving, ruby red, CRIME FREE counties of Levy, Gilchrist, Bradford, Union, and Baker.

Same with circuit judges who also face a retention vote every four years and can be removed by these same voters.

        • Aren’t the county and circuit judges competitively elected and not subject to a retention vote? If so, removing them at the ballot box would require having someone run against them.

          • They can face competition but also face retention if no challenges, not quite sure about county judges and retention vote.

Retention vote also applies to Dist Courts of Appeals and FL Supreme Court.

see listing near bottom of following:

      • Kramer is a republican. However he not a very good state attorney. Like most State Attorneys across the country they worry more about public appearance, perception, and conviction rates. That is why there is so much plea bargaining. Judges are in the same boat and need to be lax on sentencing especially around election time. Law Enforcement has been handcuffed on pursuits since the early 2000s when people started to sue departments over pursuits. Unfortunely it is almost impossible to pursue in a urban environment without risk to public safety. It truly is disgusting what the criminal justice system has become. Prayers to the victims, there is no justifying or reasoning why the suspect choose to flee.

    • Yes citizens need to demand something be done they just sit back an collect those high checks ….

    • There are traffic accidents from weather and phone usage and such, and then there are traffic accidents when running from the police, which should be defined differently and hopefully not reported as a traffic accident. I think AC has this one correct by calling it a fleeing vehicle.

    • That was not a traffic accident. That was criminal activity that result in death and injuries due to the arragance and ignorance of the fleeing driver!!

      • Agreed. WCJB unfortunately headlined as “car accident ” for the normies that read it with no context in the article iirc

        • Edit for clarity- they did mention driver running from police in the body of the article, headline states accident tho’

        • Almost impossible to read write-ups on TV20’s web site, apparently written by very crude/early version of AI text generator, grossly prone to factual error and ambiguity; have just about stopped reading their site.

Clearly no proof reading, editing, or fact checking.

    • This one is not due to roads, signs, signals or traffic volume; rather, to an uncaring reckless felon who should spend the rest of their life in prison.

  • 🤔 Wonder which stereotype this is going to fall into?
    Obviously no respect for authority.
    Fleeing law enforcement.
Abandoning accomplices to save their own ass.

Waiting with baited anticipation for this one.

  • How lovely! Guess what hairstyle the perp has? Neighbors have a pic of him getting into the ambulance after being caught. 👺💩👹👿🤡ACLUSPLCDNC

    • Please enlighten us by giving his hairstyle. He killed someone so, it shouldn’t matter if he had a buzz cut or dreads.

      • I would imagine it’s a member of the “Ain’t no one tell me what to do!” crowd, based on his decision to run from the cops and general lack of respect for everyone and everything.

    • You only know Grady’s name because of criminal activity in Lake County. Criminals have no concern about who the sherriff of poloce chief is they still do their thing.

      • No. Grady Judd, Billy Woods (Marion Co.), Wayne Ivey (Brevard Co.) are all tough on crime. If our Sheriff was effective we would have less of this.

        • The sheriff has no say in what happens to a perp after they are arrested. It’s the judges and state attnys who decide bail, sentence, whether to pursue charges, etc.

How do you think our law enforcement officers feel arresting the same felons over and over since our courts let them out again and again?

      • Criticizing a sheriff (Judd) by talking about the crime in his county, while not even knowing what county he works in (Polk) is the level of idiocy I’ve come to expect from all leftists.

  • For a long time, law enforcement would chase fugitive drivers and pit maneuver them, now they didnt pursue and this person killed somebody,

    • NW 10th between Main and 6th is a narrow two-lane road with small business, people and bike traffic. It’s active on Friday nights. The Police were right not to pursue in that area.

    • Problem is GPD has been directed to throw daffodils and daisies by city leaders. They worry more about offending a specific group of people than they do defending others.
Under current leadership, it’s going to get worse before it gets better. Rather lose your family or have the families responsible for these types of behaviors lose theirs?
For me, it’s an easy decision.

    • They were chasing him I am so disappointed in the lies even our neighbor has a recording I hope she sends in!!

      • Awesome! Proof the perp did crash into another vehicle and kill the occupant.
Hopefully the jury can see it when they find them guilty and send them to prison.

  • Idiots! Not every very bad event is due to the authorities, unless maybe if you live in a police state.

    • Agreed. “Not every bad event is due to the authorities.”
Unfortunately, the authorities turning a blind eye to the cause and blaming it on anyone and everything but the real reasons don’t do much.
I’ve lost count the number of times I’ve seen GPD avoid conflict with drivers in and about town. Fact is, LEOs aren’t writing the number of citations they did 4 years ago and no, it’s not because people are following the traffic laws more.

    • They are badly understaffed and without a police helicopter. I know you need to be spoon-fed everything or you pretend you don’t understand, so I will go ahead and explain that having a lot more cops on the road and a helicopter flying around overhead would have made him think twice about running and possibly saved this innocent victim’s life. Now it’s like the wild west – you might not see another cop for three or four miles if you can manage to get away from the one pulling you over.

      • Watch “Scooper” on YouTube and tell me how well that helicopter and multiple FHPs change a perps’s mind about running.

  • They sped past our house with cops behind them… that’s a persuit…

    • Perhaps, but assuming the dashcam is running that’s the best proof out there one way or the other so may know soon either way

  • Many of you would have had an absolute field day if the officer had elected to pursue the suspect and the result was the same – the death of an innocent citizen. GPD heads would have been on the chopping block; similarly, the race, religion, sexual orientation, and political affiliation of the officer would have been scrutinized. I read these responses as a form of entertainment, however, I must admit it worries me when I consider the mindset of many of the “regular” contributors to this forum. Knowing I drive, shop, work, and sometimes rely on the same people who believe what they share frightens me. Day in and day out there is a consistency to the irrational feedback posted by the same people. Perhaps I am overreacting and the responses are for shock value; for all I know, many may respond the way they do because there’s something safe about anonymity and people just want to see what sort of reaction they can conjure up. I get the sense though, that no matter what, nothing is ever simply evaluated solely at face value – there is always a conspiracy or an injustice, etc. To each his own…

    • I agree. Comments like that from “realJK” pretty much prove your point.

      • You’re the one who stated, “I know you need to be spoon-fed everything or you pretend you don’t understand, so I will go ahead and explain…”, so a “word salady” post seemed appropriate – you know, dress it up so it’s dumbed down fer ya.

        • I was talking about Jazzman. It’s part of his regular shtick here to misinterpret everything in a way that suits his argument; it’s a new tactic of the left, if you’ve been paying attention. It is not a game I play.

I still don’t see the point of your post. You don’t think having an adequate number of police on patrol matters? Why have any police at all – if that’s what you believe?

        • Oh, and “Mr. Bodypea”, you happen to be one of the miscreants who regularly profile and jump to conclusions based on bias, prejudice, and ignorance.

To spark your memory, here’s your brilliant articulation from above:

“I would imagine it’s a member of the ‘Ain’t no one tell me what to do!’ crowd.”

          Genius!

          • The big THUG LIFE tattoo is even more than I was expecting. But obviously I was 100% correct. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out something like that around here. The next time there’s a shootout downtown? That won’t be too hard to figure out, either.

          • Lower the tempature liberal. Take a hint from Dementia Joe. This crazy talk makes you sound as if you fell out of a coconut tree…..

    • Up and coming criminal rapper who never followed the law in Columbia County either. How about feel sad for the innocent people he injuried and killed.

  • Now this is something you get prison over. Not someone who gets drunk for the first time and makes an ass out of them selfs especially being there first arrest.

  • The driver was Erick Baker Aka Raw Yougin. He grew up in lake city I grew up with him. He was evil he always had guns. He is the reason why many of young people died in lake city. He is semi famous with rapping he has a song that has 1.4 mil views that shows his character. I don’t wish prison on anyone accept people that did something so heinous or people that constantly keep getting locked up. But locking this guy up will protect a lot of people in Lake City.. Prayers to the Deceased.
