Florida becomes the first state in the nation to adopt the Phoenix Declaration

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, the State Board of Education unanimously voted to ratify and adopt The Phoenix Declaration: An American Vision for Education as the guiding principles for education in Florida.
“Throughout Governor Ron DeSantis’ tenure, education in Florida has been guided by many of the principles embodied in the Phoenix Declaration,” said Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas. “By formally adopting this Declaration, we are reaffirming our commitment to an education system that pursues truth and virtue, empowers parents, and always prioritizes our students.”
“As one of the original public officials who signed on to the Phoenix Declaration, I knew how important it was for the State Board of Education to adopt it to serve as the unifying foundation for education in Florida.” said Ryan Petty, Chair of the State Board of Education. “The Phoenix Declaration will challenge us, as leaders, to resist complacency and ensure that Florida remains a national model for academic freedom, parental partnership, and educational excellence.”
The Phoenix Declaration was unveiled by the Heritage Foundation in collaboration with leading education scholars, policy experts, and public officials on February 17, 2025. More than 50 scholars and education policy experts and 10 educational and public interest groups signed on to the Phoenix Declaration envisioning an education system dedicated to the following:
- Parental Choice & Responsibility: Parents are the primary educators of their children. Public education funds should always follow the child.
- Transparency & Accountability: Schools must be fully transparent with parents about curricula, policies, and student well-being.
- Truth & Goodness: Students deserve an education grounded in objective truth, free from ideological fads, and oriented toward the pursuit of the good.
- Cultural Transmission: Students should learn about America’s founding principles and roots in the broader Western and Judeo-Christian traditions. Students should study the best-competing viewpoints that comprise our intellectual heritage.
- Character Formation: Schools must prepare children for the challenges and responsibilities of adulthood by cultivating virtue, personal responsibility, and self-discipline.
- Academic Excellence: Schools should prioritize proven teaching methods and a content-rich curriculum rooted in foundational subjects over fads or experimental teaching methods.
- Citizenship: Schools should teach students the civic virtues and knowledge necessary for self-government, including the value of civil disagreement. Students should learn the whole truth about America—its merits and failings—without obscuring that America is a great source of good in the world.

The unvarnished truth is that citizens had family outings at lynchings, fed Black children to alligators, and ate Black people because they believed we had magical properties. ALL that is verifiable. The enslavement, rape, and sale of human beings went on for 250+ years, you can’t dress that up.

There is some truth to the fact that the War Between The States and USA. Lincoln signed the Emancipation at the end of the war in the hopes of rallying the slaves to revolt agent the South.
There were 2 large black men that owned huge plantations. There were also indentured servants mainly Irish that were slaves.
The plantation owners had kids that were nurtured by black nannies. The only kids to play with in the neighborhood were slave kids. They would become the plantation owners later in life. The slave culture was changing for the better in most cases.
New York had as many or more slaves than the South. Personal household slaves and manufacturing slaves. They were not freed on Junteeth. Slavery was only ended in the CSA after loosing the war. A black plantation owners lawsuit prevented many slaves from being freed.
Truth is the war was about a difference in culture for the most part. North was mainly manufacturing and relied on the South to buy their goods. It was cheaper to buy goods from England and other European countries. The USA government was introducing taxes on imported goods to keep the economy of the North working. The South was mainly agricultural and needed manufactured goods to keep their economy working.
That is the main but not only reason the Confederate States Of America was formed. They were a separate government than the USA therefore not a civil war but a war between the states.
If we don’t learn the full history of our history we are doomed to relive it. The victor writes the history as it works for them. Usually not fully factual.

NO culture or country in the world did this with their slaves. It is embedded. Plain & simple. Religion was also taught and even forced onto enslaved humans to convince them that they were inherently ordained by God to be the white man’s slave. Yes, the Old Testament is vital to Christianity and to understanding the New Testament. However, Christianity is built on the ancient Israelite religion, which is not the same thing as Judaism. Judaism and Christianity share the Torah, but are otherwise almost completely different in terms of worldview, morality, etc. Judaism is a modern religion that has its roots in the Jewish people’s need to redefine their religion after the destruction of the temple (which their religion previously centered on) in 70 AD.

As an atheist I see it as less oxymoronic and more hypocritical. This country has had a long history of antisemitism (and, for that matter, anti-Catholicism), and referencing our “Judeo-Christian tradition” is just whitewashing by people who claim Jews are condemned to hell if they don’t convert.

But they no longer want to follow that rule that’s been in the constitutional laws for a very very long time now. And it seems to force focus on one, and only one, type of religious belief. (Not even taking into account that many children forced to focus on religion growing up tend to resent it where they turn their backs on those beliefs once forced upon them.
As to teaching “accuracy” does that still include forcing them to teach that slavery helped the slaves and that the bad things that happened during that time doesn’t exist? Because that doesn’t seem very accurate to me. We tend to learn not to repeat the mistakes of the past when we are actually informed about those mistakes which took place. Teaching that certain actions were actually good are only going to teach the belief that maybe that’s how it should be again since it was so supposedly beneficial to those on the receiving end. And that’s not where we need to be going back to. I miss the days when we were the land of ‘Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’ Welcoming the diversity of all cultures, religions, and backgrounds, now it’s trying to be forced to be only certain people are acceptable and only certain beliefs are acceptable, and all others are just wrong and unwelcome. It’s just a shame and in many ways kinda scary.

Total agree. My family came from Belgium in 1967 legally. America was the best we felt. We did all we could to give the country reasons to give us full citizenship. I still love this country but if we could get everyone to agree to the fact that young children do not see what the other children are or aren’t if the adults wouldn’t point out the differences. Even scientist get it wrong and just because you hold a degree does not mean you are free from error. History has shown time and again this to be true. More importantly, yes education should fully support ideology. We most definitely should be teaching children to think independently, outside of the box so to say. If you implement strict views and tell children they are bad for disagreeing with others opinions you will be setting our nation back hundreds of years. Everything our founding fathers envisioned for our country and what it took for us to get there will have been for naught. Honestly who cares what others see themselves to be. It’s none of your business and they really should keep their personal business to themselves. If you care even a little about your children our country or our future then you will do everything fathomable to adhere to and protect our constitution. Furthermore, I don’t think anyone, especially white people, is suggesting we teach our children that being white makes them inherently evil. However, the early European settlers that came here to North America to lay our foundations were wrong the way they did so. They killed the natives and tried to make them conform to their ideas of what is right or wrong. They took what was not theirs instead of forging bonds and procuring fair land agreements. No, not every settler was guilty of that behavior but obviously the majority was. That doesn’t make white people evil, it was a different time in evolution when when the human brain wasn’t as developed in the areas where empathy and emotional cognizant originate from. I also don’t think it’s fair to put the blemish of slave keeping almost solely on white Europeans when it was widely accepted in just about every early society worldwide. Unfortunately, white North American slave ownership lasted much longer and was very well documented. Point being, we have a lot in our past that is ugly and not easy to admit. Part of the problem is bullying of kids in school that is swept under the carpet at the detriment of the students. The lip service that is given to “zero tolerance” policies provides an easy answer to the system, but usually causes more harm than good.
Making parents responsible for ” educating their children” is almost laughable. Both parents have to work to afford the exorbitant cost of living, many having more than one job. While I do agree parents need to teach respect, manners and the importance of education, to teach them academics is beyond their capabilities. Children today need to know advanced science, mathematics and now AI which is more advanced than most parents knowledge.
Teachers need to control the learning environment and make knowledge interesting and fun for students. There are many, tired tenured teachers that have been at too long. They are burned out . There needs to be a rejuvenating program for teachers so they can rediscover why they became teachers and the love they had working with students.
There also needs to be a trust established so the students will feel non threatened to come forward with issues like bullying, drugs, sexual predation. Guidance counselors need to do a better job and work with teachers and parents to create a safe, fun learning environment.
As a child I was bullied mercilessly. My parents and teacher only blamed me and gave no support.
I’m adamantly opposed to the destruction of public schools, and this is most certainly the beginning of that process!
My contribution to education (I pay via my property tax) should not be used to pay for someone’s kid to go to a private school. I will be joining efforts to sue the state for not abiding by the separation of church and state, as this Phoenix BS is geared toward funding Christian schools.

Teaching and molding young children to be better humans is the way that good will overcome evil and you have to teach these things to them when they are very young and do not know the value of human life, the they need to be disciplined in what they do, also challenging them to develop their skills and knowledge, so they can see, work with or for, are friends with or in a romantic relationship… as people who has matter, have value, purpose and feelings, versus disregarding them as if they Are just machines or trash like they do today. Homelessness is a terrible crime against Humanity. The homeless are not protected under our constitution, do not have safety, the right to privacy, protection under law, the ability to raise a family or succeed in life. And people these days, as well as the government, look at them as discardable… these are human lives that are being destroyed. Teaching anyone, especially children, an education that will open their minds, hearts and understanding the value of life… for every single person, will be a great way to Make our world a much Better place, with much better people and hopefully one day much better government who values human life and actually stand behind our flag and constitution. With parental rights being paramount, how do we justify allowing the state to raise our children by teaching them discipline, moral values and religious beliefs? Parent’s should instill these values and beliefs in their children, not the state. What you’re advocating for is the opposite of respecting parental rights since many students are taught to be disciplined and to respect moral values and beliefs at home. We have people in this country who refuse to trust teacher’s when teaching about the science behind gender being on a spectrum, then, these same people want the teacher’s they don’t trust to teach their children discipline moral values and their religious belief’s. I grew up in Los Angeles 1950’s-60’s and after graduating high school, I got a job working in a movie theater selling candy and popcorn. I had to be taught how to make change. I never learned that in all my years in school. Teach real life skills, compassion, and manners. Rebuild all new schools because our current public schools are not safe. They build safe prisons and jails but not safe schools. Our schools are outdated and not safe. Our kids are grown but if they were school age I would home school.

I taught social studies and was librarian at Osceola Middle School in Ocala from 1973-2002. This edict is not new to Marion County Schools. These are basically what we followed. Parents were always welcomed and my library was filled with wonderful children’s books. It still is a terrific school.

It seems from your post that you think our current teachers are not passionate about teaching our children, and likewise lack commitment. That has not been my experience. I spent three days a week last year as a classroom volunteer in our local elementary school and participated in numerous after-school events. I’ll be doing so again this year. I was impressed not only with the dedication, and patience of these teachers, but with their teaching methods, particularly with those children who require an alternative approach to understand a concept. I wish for you the experiences I’ve had. And it was fun!

We learned about all the bad stuff in school during the 1980s—Gen X here. I never forgot the Trail of Tears, the Japanese internment camps in World War II, the six million Jews annihilated in the Holocaust, and the Civil Rights Movement with the violence of the KKK against African Americans. Still, we weren’t programmed to hate each other or our country the way the left teaches in schools today.
Back then, LGB was about anti-bullying, live and let live, and doing no harm to people who were different. It wasn’t about indoctrination or celebrating and exploring lifestyles like LGBTQIA+++. Instead, we learned to love the virtues of America and what individual freedom truly meant. 🇺🇸

I am a substitute teacher and wish students who just absolutely do not want to learn from those who are putting forth effort and excited to learn be permanently removed. Habitual problem students cause chaos and distraction to not only other students but the teachers as well. Here in Florida, there are cameras all over the school except in the classrooms where they need to be. Maybe that would stop some of the foolishness that goes on in some of those classes.

I’m 77 and for most of my life Public Schools served the community well, and were fully funded. Civics was taught, along with the fine arts. If one was unsatisfied, they could send their child to private school and pay for it out of their picket… including private religious schools. Other than that, children were taught religious tenants in Sunday School and that was that. Most children went to Public School and it worked just fine. They learned how to get along notwithstanding various opinions, religions and cultural backgrounds. I am not in favour of siphoning off taxes set aside for public education being sent to private or other institutions. If parents have a gripe, attend the PTA meetings. Take the politics out of the equation.
I thought education was the pursuit of truth, and religion the pursuit of truth. Florida as always keeps their book burning traditions alive. Read the code words well ,fads you know exactly what that means, no free thinkers in Florida no innovation, just a withe-wash of history. But the truth, the real truth always comes to light. These comments make it overwhelmingly clear that this document is badly needed because so many of you truly believe that our country’s founders firmly believed in a separation of church and state, to the extent that religion should never be mentioned in a government setting like a public school.
To counter this, I give you one sentence from the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights…”
So our founders believed there are truths, they are self-evident (not a matter of opinion, with all beliefs being equally valid), God is our Creator, and rights come from God (not government).
They also refer to this God – the God of Israel and Jesus – as the God of Nature and the Supreme Judge. Instead of keeping God out of government, they deferred to his laws (“the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God”) and asked God to judge their intentions as they started our country.
These were not men who believed religion and government were separate.

So no, it doesn’t state that church and state MUST be kept separate, it just says that they can not force a singular belief system on all person’s, and that they couldn’t control the form that another’s beliefs took. So the idea of the schools being forced to all teaching only Christianity, is forcing all those of other faiths to participate in Christian teachings.
First Amendment: The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution contains two key clauses about religion:
Establishment Clause: Prohibits the government from establishing an official religion. (Like right now they are trying to say that we are only a Christian nationalist country which goes against the establishment clause)
Free Exercise Clause: Protects the right of individuals to practice THEIR religion freely. (Not forced to practice the one and only form of faith that the heritage foundation believes is the only acceptable one)
Please read the document. It doesn’t say Christianity will be taught at all (contrary to much hand-wringing in these comments). The word “Christian” appears exactly once: “Students should therefore learn about America’s founding principles and roots in the broader Western and Judeo-Christian traditions.”

This is so refreshing to know. It’s about time the parents get to have a say in their child’s education. If this is what the elementary schools are calling “Classic” then Heck Yeah!! I pulled our son out of public school in 2010 so he would have the same education I was given. When he decided to go back to public school for socializing, his intelligence was on college level compared to his peers in regular classes. He had straight A’s without opening a book. His senior year was the same. If your district isn’t going to follow through with the classic teaching, then I highly recommend the Bekka program or Lighthouse Christian Academy. Both are great for home schooling. It just depends on if your child is disciplined enough to follow through.

That’s similar to what happens in dictatorships. Education is the responsibility of parents, not the government or the school system. Enough of trying to change reality and impose obligations as if it were a dictatorship.
