Florida creates property tax savings calculator

Staff report

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The State of Florida has created a property tax savings calculator that allows homeowners to estimate their savings from a proposal that would increase the homestead exemption from $50,000 to $250,000, with additional increases in future years.

Click here to enter your address and see your potential savings. No other information is required.

A special session of the Florida legislature begins on June 1 to consider Governor DeSantis’s proposal.

  • According to that website…taxes for our modest home would go from $5,400 to $795 per year.

Everyone who owns a home must take a look at this site. We are all being peeled by the city and county for their own politically incentivized wasteful spending.

  • Legislatures across the country make amendments to proposed legislation. I suggest they also add something that prohibits the raising of special assessments and other fees to recoup the losses from decreases in property taxes.
That’s the only way to ensure Gainesville isn’t permitted to rape us more than they do already for their virtue signaling.

    • I hope they will too! I’m pretty sure they’re damn near capped out on sales & gas tax rates.

City and county are already soft on impact fees now because they want more improved property for added property tax revenue. They love big developers despite what they tell the true believer voters.

I assume they’ll try and defund the fire department from their regular budget while simultaneously raising fire assessment fees to cover the gap. Essentially just redirecting existing fire dept funds to now fund their wasteful political junk.

  • My savings would be $848.00. I am over 65, own my home and that figure is my total tax bill. I want that back. It’s my money. I have lived in Gainesville since 1982 and own a modest 1956 built home. My home is currently appraised at $150,000.00 because the city is destroying my residential neighborhood. Cassie Willits, my D3 Commissioner told me that I am looking at the “slow, intentional death of a residential neighborhood”.
To think that I have paid taxes and spent my income in this city for 44 years, I’ve paid my fair share. Especially considering the current state of affairs here. Who’s at fault here? They can deflect all they want but the city owns our space. The responsibility of where we are as a city is on them. Time for some changes.
VOTE FOR JAMES GARDNER FOR CITY COMMISSION DISTRICT 3 and see the change.

  • I’ve been watching this with keen interest since Governor DeSantis proposed this. Sure seems like he is the main (only?) driver and the legislator would really be happy if it just died and went away.

  • DeSantis : this should be for all real estate properties, not just homesteaded…

I am officially now a 2nd class tax paying citizen…my property tax bill always goes up, insurance goes up!

We got a homeless crime emergency here, panhandlers in street medians.

Women are not safe at water 💦 fountains, bus 🚎 stops, city parks, or their homes 🏠.

how can we provide affordable housing when our property tax bill goes has up %10 a year…it’s not funny.

Cap non homestead properties @ 1.5%/ year and make local governments and school board do some cuts and tighten their belts..

Gainesville has over an $11 million budget deficit for 2027 and they call your tax relief “ the monster in the closet”❗️

Gainesville and Alachua county need to stay in their lane and focus on essential services and keep citizens safe.

They need to stop trying to control the weather with their global warming BS and take United States freedom & liberty away with the pushing of foreign government United Nations (UN) great reset.

All that UN language needs to be removed from Florida municipal codes.

commissioners think Alachua county has special status (sanctuary?) when it comes to illegal aliens & ice… I think the FDLE
Should come here and arrest them and you appoint new ones (prizzia is the one who mentioned “special status”..

You had to rescue us with the utility authority because they ruined GRU going biomass trying to comply with Kyoto protocol…put us $1billion in debt here..

They created a 10 year plan to end homelessness and now every bum on the planet 🌎 is coming here to Grace Marketplace to receive Alachua county taxpayer benefits. This practice needs to end!

It’s not the job of Alachua county taxpayers to provide all the planet earths🌍 drug addicts, perverts, & prison releases with Alachua county taxpayer money and buy them motels to live here and make its associated crime a permanent feature here..

Their charity has caused a public safety issue here…

Homeless benefits should be a hand 🤚 up and a ticket 🎟️ out…

You need to mandate that charity should only be .0001 of the city’s budget…

They want to increase fire assessments now.

Taxpayers need a break, and government needs to cut nonessential services..

    • Well said Bull, but I think you might have a better chance at convincing the voters. We can make a difference here but we need some accountability and transparency. The cards will fall when the facts are known.
