Florida DOGE requests site visit to Gainesville City Hall

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Today, Florida Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia announced that letters were sent to the City of Gainesville and Broward County, requesting financial information on “compensations, contracts, DEI, etc.” The letter to the City of Gainesville requested access to the City’s physical premises, data systems, and personnel on July 31 and August 1.

Florida’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), under the Executive Office of the Governor, previously sent letters to all counties and municipalities, requesting financial information, and the letters sent today are follow-ups to the responses from the City of Gainesville and Broward County.

The letter begins, “Dear Mayor Ward, Over the last four years, the taxpayers of Gainesville have watched as your city government has increased annual burdens on property owners by over $30 million dollars [sic] in additional ad valorem tax collections – an increase of over 80%. Simultaneously, Gainesville’s annual budget has expanded by nearly $90 million per year, over $600 per resident.”

  • Our elected legislature has the power to change the City Charter without a referendum, and has, to dissolve the City altogether, ask the Governor to throw the Mayor and Commissioners out of office and appoint replacements, to transfer ownership of GRU to the GRU Authority,among other things.
