Press release from the Office of Governor Ron DeSantis

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, the Heritage Foundation announced that Florida ranks #1 in Education Freedom for the third year in a row. This achievement is a direct result of Florida’s priorities to expand school choice, support parental rights in education, and ensure that families can make the best educational choice for their individual child. The Education Freedom Report Card began in 2022, and Florida has earned the top ranking every year since its inception.

“Florida has enacted policies that allow parents to direct where education money goes,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Our universal school choice program has empowered families, benefited students, and improved educational opportunities. Florida leads on education freedom—and students and families are better off because of this leadership.”

“I am proud that Florida has once again been recognized for our commitment to ensuring that students can access an education that works for them,” said Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. “Under Governor DeSantis’ leadership, Florida offers the most robust array of education options in the nation. I encourage other states to follow our example and break the norm to create higher performing students and happier families.”

The report card uses four categories to rank states: school choice, transparency, regulatory freedom, and spending. States were evaluated on the access to scholarship programs, the design of private schools, and the environment for charter schools and homeschooling within the education choice category.

In addition to Florida’s overall rank as #1 for Education Freedom, Florida also earned high rankings in the following categories:

  • #1 for Academic Transparency due to Florida’s expansive legislation allowing parents to access classroom materials and Florida’s Parental Bill of Rights.
  • #2 for Teacher Freedom due to Florida’s alternative pathways to entering the teaching profession.
  • #2 for Education Choice due to Florida’s empowerment of families to make the best educational choice for their individual child.

The full Education Freedom Report Card can be viewed on the Heritage Foundation website.

  • Is this a joke? because this can only be a joke! Education freedom? what freedom are they talking about? if our history is censored, our literature is censored, our teachers are censored. the rule of law is not respected!!! In addition to these same reasons, FL is one of the poorest states in the Union!
    Freedom, make me laugh
    Freedom, yeah right…

  • Heritage Foundation wrote Project 2025 so their credibility should not be accepted. Wish it was a joke, but it’s not. If you know a teacher, you know these rankings are rank.

  • The thing that hurts the children the most is the sub standard schooling and discipline in the blue counties like Alachua. For more than 20 years, the divide between the different groups has held them far apart, causing kids who want to learn to leave public schools for private, charter or even home schooling. Except for whining, the Democrats running the school system have done nothing to actually fix the problems they have caused.

  • DeSantis has put restrictions on curriculum that express the extreme right wing view he favors. Like much of his program, from abortion, to limiting self governing by local communities and cities, to replacing elected officials who are not corrupt or incompetent because he disagrees with them, to using the power of the state to punish companies who’s owners or CEOs say something he doesn’t like, to now using dirty tricks and police intimidation to counter citizen initiative constitutional amendments on the ballot – that’s not freedom, that’s dictator BS.

    • Thank the Lord that he did! Sexualizing our kids, training them to look exclusively at the color of people’s skin and not their character, and segregating them accordingly, and indoctrinating them to hate the nation that was fought for and protected by their ancestors are all terrible, Marxist ideologies and agendas to destroy the USA from the inside out.
The CCP hates everything the DeSantis does, and that’s a good, no, great thing!

  • A #1 “award” from the Heritage Foundation today is as unbiased and believable as receiving a “#1 For promoting DEI and World Peace” Award from the German government in 1938.

  • How bout a study that measures parental involvement? How bout one that takes into account juvenile criminal arrests too? The left doesn’t care much for statistics that incorporate student/parent personal responsibility.
