Press release from the Office of Governor Ron DeSantis with staff reporting on testing results

LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla. — Today, Governor Ron DeSantis, First Lady Casey DeSantis, and Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo announced new food safety findings under the Healthy Florida First initiative, with the release of bread product testing results conducted by the Florida Department of Health (DOH) to increase transparency for Florida families and reinforce accountability for everyday food products.

“As Governor, I have worked to make Florida the model for health freedom,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “I’m proud of First Lady Casey DeSantis’ leadership on Healthy Florida First. Today’s announcement about bread product testing, which follows the release of infant formula and candy test results, is another step toward a healthier future. We will continue working to arm Floridians with the information they need to make the best choices for their families’ well-being.”

Last month, Florida released infant formula testing results after DOH analyzed 24 infant formula products sold online and in stores across the state, reviewing samples from seven major brands for heavy metals and pesticides. The testing identified elevated levels of certain heavy metals compared to health-based screening benchmarks, including mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and lead.

Building on that work, DOH tested 46 candy products from 10 companies for heavy metals. Arsenic was detected in 28 of the products tested, prompting further evaluation of potential exposure risks, particularly for children. Those results were released to provide families with clear, accessible information and promote accountability for products widely consumed by Florida’s children.

Florida has now expanded its independent testing to bread. DOH tested eight bread products across five national brands commonly available in Florida grocery stores. Glyphosate, a widely used herbicide commonly applied in agricultural production to control weeds, was detected in six of the eight bread products tested. The results released today are intended to give families additional insight into everyday foods and support informed decision-making.

Glyphosate was detected in Nature’s Own Butter Bread, Nature’s Own Perfectly Crafted White, Wonder Bread Classic White, and Sara Lee Honey Wheat. Lower levels were found in Dave’s Killer Bread White Done Right and Dave’s Killer Bread 21 Whole Grain. No glyphosate was detected in loaves of Sara Lee Artesano White and Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Hearty White.

“The Healthy Florida First initiative is taking proactive steps to strengthen food safety standards nationwide,” said First Lady Casey DeSantis. “The results from the Florida Department of Health’s analysis of bread testing results show troubling levels of glyphosate. Consumers deserve to know what chemical contaminants are in their food so that they can make informed decisions.”

“Bread is a staple food for many Florida families, and they should be able to consume it without worrying about toxins,” said State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo. “Our testing found high levels of glyphosate in some popular bread brands. Chronic exposure to glyphosate is linked to harmful gut microbiome changes, liver inflammation, and adverse neurologic effects. Florida is taking action through transparency, continued testing, and a clear focus on reducing exposure to protect families.”

The bread testing initiative, along with the previously released infant formula and candy testing results, is part of Florida’s broader Healthy Florida First effort, which focuses on clean and transparent food systems, accountability, and restoring trust in public health through evidence-based action.

  • ““As Governor, I have worked to make Florida the model for health freedom,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “I’m proud of First Lady Casey DeSantis’ leadership on Healthy Florida First.”

Gee, I remember not so long ago when Republicans flipped out because Michelle Obama planted a garden on the WH lawn and encouraged families to eat healthy. Now we have ignorant and misinformed people like RFKjr and now Casey DeSantis specifiying both dietary and medical advice as if they weren’t ignorant and wrong quacks. Michelle just recommended eating your brocoli and was denounced as a communist.

And the governor calls this “freedom”? It’s his brand, like “good nutrition” is Cocao Puff’s.

      • I wasn’t aware Mike Pence planted a garden at the White House – is that the Mike you’re referring to? Also, it’s “where”, not “were.” No wonder why the current POTUS loves the uneducated.

          • Bear, you’re just confused, no doubt because Melania actually posed for women on women nude photos before deciding to try another career golddigging for pasty overweight con men. Michelle of course wouldn’t have stooped that low despite her lovely figure.

        • PS That’s true by the way. It also true that the beautiful Michelle has a Princeton BA and a law degree from Harvard and is the most admired woman in the US.

  • I really wish on the issue of food safety people would put the politics on the back burner.

This testing should have been done long ago and the U.S. is the ONLY country in the World that allows hundreds of poisons and chemicals in our food supply !
Unless you are in the pocket of the big food manufacturers (and many politicians of BOTH parties are), everyone should be behind this to get our food supply safe.

Arsenic in candy and Roundup in your bread, disgusting.

  • This is a nonsense bs story and they dont even give context in the results. You have to dig in to find the results are in parts per billilion ppb the highest tested was 191.04ppb which converts to .19104 ppm or parts per million also known as mg/kg. i.e. if you eat 1kg of bread roughly the whole 2.2lb loaf you would ingest 0.191mg of glyphosate. EPA has at its lowest limit a legal limit of 70mg of exposure per day. The even pickier California standard is 1.1mg per day. I dont know about you I’m not eating 10 loaves of bread a day. This is just where the authorities say there might be a concern and that gives a wide safety margin still. Poison is in the dose and units and limits in test results matter. They couldn’t even give the results of the arsenic. Guess what arsenic occurs naturally in the soil and plants suck it up and you eat it all the time. Dose matters and this is just chemical fear mongering the same thing DeSantis did scaring people against a covid shot but when he uses science to scare it’s ok.
