Former Walmart employee arrested for shooting man during argument in Walmart employee area
Staff report
Updated at 3:30 p.m. with information from a Gainesville Police Department release
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Drevon Javaris Parker, 26, has been charged with attempted homicide after allegedly shooting a Walmart employee during an argument in an employee-only area of the Butler Plaza Walmart (2900 SW 42nd Street).
According to a witness, Parker, a former Walmart employee who was terminated in 2024, went into the employee area and began talking to him about “an unknown female dispute.”
According to this witness, the 36-year-old victim, his wife, and his children also walked into the employee area, and the witness reportedly said he told the victim’s wife she could not be in the employee area, but she started yelling at Parker “because [Parker] was accusing the [victim] of something unknown.”
A second witness reportedly said that after the victim and his family entered the employee area, the victim’s wife “began to argue and yell” while looking for the second witness (the report does not state why she was looking for the second witness).
The victim’s wife reportedly said she went to the store with the victim to shop and they saw Parker and got into a verbal argument, so the second witness told them to go to the employee area.
The two witnesses and the victim’s wife all reportedly said the victim punched Parker during their argument, and then Parker pulled a pistol from his hoodie pocket and shot the victim several times.
A third witness did not see the shooting but ran up to the victim after the shooting and asked him who shot him. According to that witness, the victim said, “Drey shot me, he’s trying to take my life.”
A press release from Gainesville Police Department states that the argument between the victim, his wife, and Parker began outside the store and continued inside, where it escalated into a physical fight.
A Gainesville Police Department (GPD) officer wrote that surveillance video shows Parker, the victim, the victim’s wife, the witnesses, and other employees in the back room; Parker, the victim, the victim’s wife, and the second witness are all seen arguing with each other, with the first witness trying to separate them. The video reportedly shows the victim punching Parker once and then stumbling forward while Parker turns and follows the victim while shooting at the victim. After the shooting, Parker reportedly picks up a shoe that had fallen off and runs away.
The arrest report states that the victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition; he underwent surgery and is in stable condition, as of 3:30 p.m. on May 1.
Parker reportedly ran out of the store, got in his car, drove out of the parking lot, then drove back into the parking lot and parked his car; the arresting officer reported that the pistol used to shoot the victim was tan, and when Parker’s car was found in the parking lot, there was a tan pistol in plain sight in the passenger seat.
After parking his car, Parker reportedly tried to go back into the store and was confronted by a GPD officer, who told him to get on the ground and searched him for weapons. At the time, that officer did not know Parker was involved in the shooting, and the situation was chaotic because people were running out of the store, thinking there was an active shooter. Parker reportedly did not speak to any officers and left Walmart at some point, but he turned himself in at GPD headquarters a short time later.
Post Miranda, Parker reportedly declined to answer questions.
Parker has been charged with attempted homicide. Information on his criminal history and bail will be added when it is available.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
This may end up being stand your ground, the guy was attacked and then shot his attacker. I would like to see video, did he shoot the attacker in the back as he stumbled forward? ….I’m ready for the “rest” of the story before taking a side here but I would hardly call the guy that punched first the victim, sounds like he started the physical violence.
Uh… you can’t just make somebody you don’t like angry and get them to punch you and then shoot them and claim self-defense. He evidently went there looking for trouble.
Stand your ground only applies in a place a person has the right to be in. In this case it doesn’t apply because he was in an employee only area, a place he had no right to be in.
I cannot believe the justice system……my ex wife called me before returning from Tennessee and told me maybe l need to get shot..and go to jail as she wanted me out of our house. And four days later she shot me running away from her and tore her shirt and threw a few things around and called the police in alachua and said that l assaulted her and she was standing her ground..after being treated at the hospital l was arrested for assault and battery and had four years of my life ruined while she sold the house and moved to Tennessee with another man…..thanks alachua county for nothing
Where are my guilty white lefties from the original story who implied the shooter was white since it happened on the west side of town?
They’re not turning themselves in to the PoPo.
My guess is they’re looking for something else to go into full blame someone else/denial/deflection mode for.
That would make them in some ways resemble the person they most abhor.
Very curious to see how this pans out, if the shooter was assaulted first, there is the potential for stand your ground but shooting someone in the back as they are moving away will hinder the defense. If he is cornered with multiple people “fighting” then who knows. Glad I am not the prosecutor on this one, lots of grey areas to shine the light on.
This shooting was over the victims wife and now she is on Word of Mouth playing it up. Someone has a Go fund Me started for them.
I am sure she is devastated but damn! All over a woman.
From what I have read about the incident she might have escalated the argument.
“All over a woman.” It so often is.
Love, money or drugs.
So if someone in a bar punches you, you can immediately execute them with a firearm? I think yall need to re-evaluate what stand your ground is… everybody soft as hell nowadays…
🎯
If I have a concealed weapon and you take a punch at me, without knowing I have a pistol. I am then rindered unconscious and you then have the possibility to take my weapon and hurt me much worse than I already am. I rather take my chance and take out an aggressor who can’t control their anger. I value my life way more.
Blatantly false. Personal experience.
The problem with society nowadays is most people are weak, they don’t know how to defend themselves in a fistfight and rely on guns. Any fool can pull a trigger. People need to start learning how to fight again.
Do you mean “weak” as in the Democratic Party thinking it is fair for our daughters and granddaughters to compete vs biological males in sports weak? I bet you do, along with the other liberals on this site!
Weapons have always been the “equalizer!” The bullies and thugs need to consider whether their chosen victim is armed or not; that doesn’t happen when the criminal picks a victim with an obvious physical difference!
I mean weak like you disgusting republicans are.
Oh bravo, I knew some idiot would drag politics into this, congratulations, you’re it.
This is a direct result of the insane number of guns in this country and the legality of carrying in public places. Y’all pushing this dangerous crap are responsible for this kind of mindless lethality. Hey, throw a punch in the old days and now it’s shoot ’em. Same thing with TB McPherson incident and one of the victims is dead now. Gun queers are ruining are public spaces.
Wrong. This is the result of a likely insane person, at the very least, a mentally unstable one. Maybe he was just emotionally distraught; we’ve seen how you’re affected by certain political happenings.
There’s lots of public spaces, lots. This isn’t happening at all of them. Stop blaming firearms.
Cut the crap and the excuses. Other countries have insane people. They don’t have guns like we do here and they don’t put up with this BS.
Blame the inanimate object. That’s really queer.
Other countries don’t put up with your BS either.
Maybe that’s why few people moved after the 2020 and 2024 elections.
Correction, 2016 election.
This was not in “are public spaces.” Gun owners are hardly in the minority, and there are plenty of “non-queers” who mutually associate, so it’s not clear what “gun queers” refers to.
Walmart is a public space. So is TB McPherson. You idiots, the governor, and the entire GOP want more guns in more people’s pockets, purses, and glove compartments. What the hell do you think is going to happen? Use your head!
Gun queers are the freaks who never grew up and just love imagining themselves as cowboys and cops shooting bad guys with cool looking lethal weapons like in the movies. Hey! Buy a motorcycle or high tech bike. Same cool looking metal, no blown up kids.
Been skipping over the recent motorcycle stories lately?
Using “queers” as a slur is not very woke of you Jazzy. Time to kneel at the LGBTQ altar and beg for mercy.
Oh great comment Sharkeisha!
Legal gun owners aren’t the problem. It’s those who obtain weapons illegally. Throw a punch? Americans don’t do that anymore, where have you been? Even today’s politicians tell their party to “get in their face, tell them they are not welcome here!” So who is “pushing this dangerous crap?”
This was an unfortunate incident. I bet the weapon was obtained illegally! Wait and see!
The laws are ridiculous now and it is not an accident that this happens no where else in civilization except in America which also leads the world in guns.
Hey, can you do that difficult math?
If memory serves me correctly, Dixie County has one of the highest ratios per capita of firearms to residents.
They don’t seem to have issues.
Violent crime rate (violent crimes per 100,000 population)
1st number Dixie Co, 2nd number Florida rate
2019 535.8 382.4 2020 552.1 384.1

AI Overview:
In 2023, Florida had a violent crime rate of 150.7 per 100,000 people. The counties with the highest violent crime rates are: Baker (306.0), Alachua (200.4), and Bay (286.7). These rates are based on crimes reported to law enforcement.
You said Dixie County dummie, your point being how safe it was there with high gun ownership. Here’s a clue, and you need it. – There are no safe counties in Florida and very few in America.
Violent crimes is a broad label that includes more than just firearms, but you knew that already. I provided the other links to show the difference between your hero, Newsom, and you nemesis, DeSantis.
By the way, it’s safe at my house dumbass.
Plenty of other developed nations have firearms, but they are homogenous and haven’t been blessed with diversity. We don’t have a gun problem.
BS Sharon. No developed nation has guns like the US or the high number of deaths from shootings – #1 killer of kids here. You have to be an idiot not to do this 2+2 analysis.
Actually, most northern European countries have very lax gun laws. So yes, it is our diversity that drives the crime. Or are we going to pretend per capita isn’t a thing too?
Complete BS Wake up.
“German gun laws are known for being some of the strictest in the world. To legally own a firearm, individuals typically need a Weapons Possession Card (Waffenbesitzkarte or WBK) and must demonstrate a justified need for the weapon, such as hunting, sports shooting, or weapon collecting. There are also requirements for proper storage, training, and background checks.”
“In France, gun ownership is regulated and firearms are categorized, with some restrictions on who can own them and where they can be carried. To purchase a firearm, a hunting or shooting sports license is generally required, depending on the weapon’s type and capacity. There are also restrictions on carrying firearms in public, and penalties for doing so without proper authorization.”
“In England, gun ownership is strictly regulated and considered a privilege, not a right. Individuals must obtain a license from the police to possess firearms and must demonstrate a “good reason” for needing a gun, such as for sport, recreation, hunting, or work. The police assess applicants to ensure they are not a threat to public safety and can safely store and handle firearms.”
“The Netherlands has strict gun control laws. Import, export, manufacture, possession, or supply of firearms requires an official certificate. These laws extend to various weapons, including shotguns, certain pistols, and even objects resembling firearms. Licences are granted under specific conditions, for example, to members of rifle clubs who meet certain criteria. Carrying firearms in public, even with a license, requires a separate permit.”
“In Norway, gun ownership is heavily restricted and requires a license. A Våpenkort (Firearms Permit) is needed, and it’s issued by the police based on a case-by-case basis, considering factors like legal use (hunting, sports shooting), competency, and responsible storage. The age requirement for rifles and shotguns is 18, while handguns require a license for those 21 and older. “
Republicans are the problem.
Oh horse pucky, criminals are the problem.
What’s your deal????
I hope the victim be alright that’s so sad.
Moral of the story: you can shoot someone in Butler Plaza and totally get away from the cops. This is the second time in a month or so that this has happened.
Dude turned himself in. That one chick last time (the public freakout) got away from cops and SWAT team after they watched her for like an hour.
Why are local businesses even paying taxes? Serious question
Yeah, since everybody is packing heat now – thanks Governor Parkland High School and the GOP! – we need more of a police state
Stand your ground seems..
Everyone who claims this is a “Stand Your Ground” case has never actually read the statute. Fist to face does not meet the guidelines for using deadly force.
F.S.S. 776.012(2):
“A person is justified in using or threatening to use deadly force if he or she reasonably believes that using or threatening to use such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony. A person who uses or threatens to use deadly force in accordance with this subsection does not have a duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground if the person using or threatening to use the deadly force is not engaged in a criminal activity and is in a place where he or she has a right to be.”
Parker, a former Walmart employee who was terminated in 2024, went into the employee area and began talking to him about “an unknown female dispute
“Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame
But I know, it’s nobody’s fault”
Please rename it the SWAG Walmart.
