Forward Focus: Eastern Alachua County kicks off three-year initiative

Press release from Alachua County

HAWTHORNE, Fla. – The Alachua County Board of County Commissioners is pleased to announce the launch of Forward Focus: Eastern Alachua County, a three-year initiative to enhance quality of life, boost economic opportunities, and address community needs in the eastern part of the county.

To kick off this important project, a community input session will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hawthorne Middle/High School (21403 SE 69th Ave., Hawthorne). The session is open to all residents, businesses, and local leaders, providing an opportunity to share insights and ideas about the future of eastern Alachua County.

“We see incredible potential in eastern Alachua County,” said Assistant County Manager Missy Daniels. “This initiative is about unlocking that potential by partnering with the community to create a brighter, more prosperous future for everyone.”

The Forward Focus initiative will focus on a range of issues, including:

  • Economic development: Creating jobs and supporting local businesses.
  • Community services: Ensuring access to essential services like healthcare, education, broadband, and transportation.
  • Infrastructure: Improving roads, bridges, and other public facilities.
  • Quality of life: Preserving natural resources, enhancing recreational opportunities, and fostering a stronger sense of community.

During the Oct. 24 meeting, County staff will outline the project’s goals and timeline. Attendees will also have an opportunity to provide valuable feedback, which will guide the creation of a community-wide survey designed to capture the needs and aspirations of residents.

Over the next year, additional community meetings will be held across eastern Alachua County to gather input from residents and stakeholders to help develop a comprehensive plan for the project.

  • Hah. The best thing Alachua County can do for the eastern side is let us annex onto neighboring counties!

    • Sure, Shands is already the largest employer of Putnam County residents, so you can add to the paycheck drain while still whining about everything.

On 2nd thought, why don’t you move to Putnam County?

      • I would if I could! Their roads don’t have potholes and they don’t put up with woke nonsense.

    • Beardy: Take a clue from Little Timmy and his fabulous Springs County movement to secede the western part of Alachua County.

Start your own movement to secede the eastern part of Alachua County into Flatwoods County, then govern yourselves.

Alachua County will then consist of the woke liburls in Gainesville and GRU by themselves.

Everyone will be happy. History from 1861 tells us that secession is a great way to adjust all social ills. Just split.

  • Make sure you take the City of Gainesville with you as well as your County Commissioner .

  • The best thing voters can do for eastern Alachua Cty is vote NO on “Amending the County Charter to Provide for County
Commissioner Elections on an At Large Basis”.

At-Large voting for County Commissioners has contributed to the malaise in the eastern part of the county.

We FINALLY got Single Member District representation, and the commissioners are trying to it away already.

We need representation on the County Commission, too – not just whoever Gainesville residents want.

    • There is one big thing you do not get. The county commission seats are essentially pie shaped districts meeting in downtown Gainesville. Thus 1/5 of Gainesville residents plus sume rural areas are in each district. Evil liberal tree hugging woke Gainesville Democrats are thus a majority in each district. Single member districts will have little effect on the outcomes.
The ONLY way the Conservative Republicans can make a change is to get THREE of themselves elected, then redraw the district lines to favor Republican candidates.
The Republicans had the perhaps once in a lifetime chance this year with single member districts to elect THREE of themselves to the BOCC, BUT not one Republican in Alachua County had the balls to run against Chuck Chestnut. Bunch of loud mouthed wimps led by Little Timmy. You do not get elected if you do not run for office with candidates who promote a good message the voters will vote for.
