Frazer Middle School team wins second straight MATHCOUNTS state championship

Press release from The Frazer School

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Frazer Middle School team won its second straight MATHCOUNTS state championship, and Frazer School student Jason Zhang took first place in the competition, earning a spot on the four-person team that will represent Florida at the National Competition.

MATHCOUNTS is a national program that provides students in grades 6-8 the opportunity to compete in live contests against and alongside their peers. This year, approximately 200 middle school teams across Florida competed in local chapter competitions. The top two teams plus the top two individuals not on those teams qualify for the State Championship. This year, 42 teams qualified for the championship, along with 35 individuals. A team consists of four members and an alternate. The top four individuals at the State Championship get to represent Florida at the National Championship.

The first-place Frazer team consisted of Jason Zhang, Vivek Kolli, Isabella Mendoza, and Jacob Paret. The Frazer team placed four individuals in the top 17. Jason Zhang took first place, earning a spot on the four-person team that will represent Florida at the National Competition. Jason became the third student from Alachua County to win the state competition; the other two were Jake Frazer in 2017 and Eric Gao in 2023. The other top finishers for the Frazer team were Abby Guo in 10th place, Vivek Kolli in 12th place, and Jacob Paret in 17th place.

According to school founder Will Frazer, the team was losing to Orlando Science at the end of the individual rounds of sprint and target. They passed Orlando Science by scoring 9 out of 10 questions in the team round, while no other team in the 42-team field scored higher than a 6 on the team round. “We expected the competition to be very close. Orlando Science had all four members of last year’s team returning. Some of our kids had an off day during the individual rounds, but they maintained their composure during the team round. This group is very mature and knows how to work well as a unit. Their ability to handle the team round has been a huge strength this year during practice.”

The 2026 RTX MATHCOUNTS National Competition will be held May 10th-11th in Orlando, FL.

  • Well done! I think success in math involves doing the work. These young champions won by working together!
