Press release from The Frazer School

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a return to live competition hosted by UF this past weekend, Frazer School won the North Central Florida Regional Science Bowl, earning one of Florida’s two bids to the National Science Bowl, which will take place April 30-May 4 in Washington, D.C. There are 64 bids available in the country, which will send champions to nationals representing all 50 states, and some larger states get multiple bids. This is the second year in a row that the school has earned this honor. Last year, the competition was hosted online.

This weekend’s competition consisted of an eight-game round robin where two teams of four competitors face off to answer science questions, which are read aloud. Team members buzz in when they know the answer, as in the game show “Jeopardy.” At the end of the round robin, the two teams with the most wins played each other in the finals.

This year’s champions, Frazer School, went undefeated. Their smallest margin of victory was by 136 points, and the total points they scored in the round robin, 1650, was more than the next two teams combined. Middleton High School from Tampa took second place in a final match that was close early, but after a burst before the half, Frazer School never looked back and ended up winning with a final score of 206-36.

Coach Marc Moody said, “We’ve had a great year so far, and we have a unique group of competitors. They were already really smart when they came to us. We have tried to create an environment where they are able to chase their interests and test their limits. I’ve known these guys for years now. I’m proud of what they’ve done, and I’m honored to be a part of their journey. I hope we make a big splash at nationals to give our three seniors something really special to go out on!”

Coach David Buffkin said, “Today was awesome, but our bar is high. The team is much better than even just last year; we have our sights set on a win at nationals this year. We will keep working hard for it.”

  • They just keep on hitting homeruns at Frazer. The SBAC absolutely cringes when this school keeps winning. Well done!
