Gainesville and High Springs to hold elections on November 4

Staff report

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – The Cities of Gainesville and High Springs will hold elections on November 4.

Gainesville

The City of Gainesville’s Special Election will have one question:

“SHALL THE CITY OF GAINESVILLE CHARTER BE AMENDED TO
DELETE ARTICLE VII, ELIMINATING THE GOVERNOR-APPOINTED
GAINESVILLE REGIONAL UTILITIES AUTHORITY AND ITS
AUTHORITY-APPOINTED CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER/GENERAL
MANAGER THAT MANAGE, OPERATE, AND CONTROL THE CITY OF
GAINESVILLE’S LOCAL PUBLIC UTILITIES, SO THAT THE ELECTED
CITY COMMISSION AND ITS CITY COMMISSION-APPOINTED CHARTER
OFFICER HAVE THAT RESPONSIBILITY; AND ELIMINATING
LIMITATIONS ON THE GOVERNMENT SERVICES CONTRIBUTION AND
UTILITY DIRECTIVES, AS PROPOSED BY ORDINANCE NO. 2025-416?”

A “Yes” vote will return governance of Gainesville Regional Utilities to the Gainesville City Commission; a “No” vote will keep the GRU Authority as the governing board of the utility.

Only voters residing within the City of Gainesville city limits are eligible to vote in this election.

Code Amendment

“Shall Sections 10-2(c)-(e) of the City’s Code of Ordinances be amended to permit businesses that derive 51 percent of its gross revenue from the sale of food and nonalcoholic beverages, and breweries, businesses that manufacture malt beverages on site, with a beverage license to sell alcoholic beverages and malt beverages, respectively, for on-premises consumption Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 10 p.m.?” (Yes/No)

  • This is the opportunity to show whether your political fealty means more than how much money you spend on utilities.

If it’s the former over the latter, stop all your crying and whining about not having any money.

      • It’s clear where your fealty lies.

Like I said, don’t be a crybaby when the utility rates go up. If you don’t, it’s likely your momma & daddy are paying them for you.

        • So you prefer temporary comfort over liberty? You must like the taste of Meatball A LOT, lol.

Also, I don’t have parental largesse to depend on in the way you suggest. Sounds like you’re familiar with that scenario, though. Perhaps you’re still too young to recognize how the intellectually vacant worldview and ethically stunted policies of conservativism lead only to increased immiseration and social unrest. But you’ll get there, kid. Give yourself a few more years.

          • I prefer a solid diet over the cream they’re feeding you, but to each their own.

For the record, I prefer long term financial responsibility and stability more than the continued uncertainty and continued rate hikes you’ve pledged your allegiance to.

You do know that prior to Johnson’s great social experiment that minorities were far more entrenched with familial relationships and biblical structure within the home don’t you? Perhaps you do and you’re just one of those people who think it’s the government’s job to provide for you. That’s what many left leaning knuckleheads believe.

          • Love how you refer only to “biblical[ly]” “entrenched” (interesting word choice) “minorities” and not the “structure” of other faiths. And you provide no substance or principle to support the idea that it’s NOT (or SHOULDN’T be) government’s job to “provide” a social welfare support system. I may be a knucklehead, but you sound like a knuckledragger.

          • Well the goal of the Democratic Party is to keep people enslaved but you knew that already. You also fail to dispute how Johnson’s policies made it more attractive for some to get rid of their baby daddy rather than make an effort to maintain a nuclear family which by most statistics, contribute to less gang involvement and crime within minority communities. Keep smoking that wacky weed though, even if you don’t get the munchies you’ll be happy with your ignorance.

I don’t see where I referred to any specific faith but thanks for the apparent lack of knowledge on your part.

It’s not government’s job to take care of people who are able to provide for themselves and the government should never be caring for others before it cares for its own. You obviously aren’t a fan of cleaning up your own backyard before cleaning someone else’s.

As for being a knuckledragger, that’s subjective. I guess it’s easier for me to lift my hands up than it is for you to pull your head out of your ass.

          • Or someone else’s.

Maybe you enjoy that, maybe they do. Guess that’s subjective as well.

          • So “biblical” doesn’t narrow down the faith options considerably? Um, okay….

So what are you, a libertarian?? CRINGE, lol.

“The goal of the Democratic Party is to keep people enslaved but you knew that already”?? Nope, never knew that, still don’t know it. I’m not a fan of the Democratic Party per se, mind you. For my taste, it’s way too — what was your word? — entrenched by corporate interests and a misplaced privileging of “bipartisanship.”

You think way too much about my body, dude.

          • ‘Liberty?’ With the absolute incompetence [at best] displayed by the city commission, and its blatant use of our local utility as a cash cow, I will take the ‘benevolent competence’ of the state in appointing competent and appropriately experienced members to a governing board. VOTE NO
