Gainesville begins mosquito spraying to control numbers rising after Hurricane Debby
Press release from City of Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Local mosquito populations already on the rise prior to the arrival of Hurricane Debby are finding new breeding grounds in standing water left behind by the storm.
Last week, the City of Gainesville’s Mosquito Control division began spraying for mosquitoes throughout Gainesville and are expected to continue spraying this week. (The treatment schedule is available online).
- Neighbors who do not wish their properties sprayed can be added to the courtesy list by calling 352-393-8287.
Staff is asking neighbors to help curb mosquito populations by draining items and containers on their property that may have collected water during the storm. These include boat covers, tarps, tire swings, discarded tires, and saucers under potted plants.
For neighbors with retention ponds on their property, the division provides mosquito fish, free of charge.
- To request mosquito fish, please call 352-393-8287.
The Mosquito Control division actively monitors and treats more than 650 breeding sites throughout Gainesville for mosquito larvae including retention ponds, roadside ditches, low-lying regions, and areas prone to flooding.
Neighbors can help document local flooding by submitting photos on the city’s online Flood Reporter Application. (Floodwaters may contain bacteria, debris, or other pollutants; please take photos from dry land.)
“Neighbors who do not wish their properties sprayed can be added to the courtesy list by calling 352-393-8287.“
This is not true. I’ve been on the ‘courtesy list’ for years and still, multiple time a year, they spray right on me. Complete disregard….these people are full of sh!t and they know it.
thank you for spraying mosquitos are terrible now
It kills butterflies & honeybees…all the anole lizards will eat them and they’ll get the hotfoot & it will kill dragonflies too…the poison will kill them over time & you too…spraying poison in the air is rediculous…that poison synegises into a compound 1000 times more toxic if it sits in the barrel a long time. How do I know?
Call the poison control label if you get get exposed to it! I talked to the doctor on the label from American cyanidamide corporation 35 years ago and he told me to shower immediately….said that spraying for mosquitoes back then at this day & age was unnecessary.
Don’t believe me? It’s POISON‼️
Request a copy of the label on what they are spraying! Everything gets the hotfoot including the bats
And everything in the food chain…
Your backyard garden is no longer
Organic either. The poison works on your nervous system…
There’s a skull & cross bones on the label! ☠️ it doesn’t matter if they spray at dusk or before dawn.
It’s poison… did you read the label on the the poison can they are spraying? No. It’s pesticide!!! Call and tell them put you on no spray list.
Whatever we do to the web of life, we do to ourselves. Stay indoors if you hove mosquitoes out. Mosquitos are part of the food chain.
Bullsh*t-Winkles is very smart.
Yes, stay indoors in your homes that we cut down trees to make the lumber to build. By the way we are the food in the chain for mosquitos and the incubation ground for the disease they spread.
OMG…all the Chicken Littles who are unwilling to acknowledge the benefit of spraying for mosquitos.
Let’s spray you cause your face diaper & clot shot don’t work.
Nature will keep it in balance.
Notice all the lizards & dragonflies out right now? They will feast!
1/2 the time your brain isn’t either but apparently you haven’t harmed yourself.
Not as far as we know anyway.
Mosquitoes spread diseases like malaria and dengue fever to name just two. With climate change, these diseases are spreading north. If mosquitoes are not controlled, you may find yourself part of the food chain (best outcome) or saddled with debilitating long term symptoms from a mosquito borne illness.
People can use mosquito repellants when they go outside.
I guess staying indoors for C19
And being a superhero was BS then. Thanks for acknowledging that.
Here we go on the climate train again.
Spraying doesn’t work other than a droplet hitting a flying adult mosquito. It’s an old-boy South Florida approach that people just accept and even ask for. Beekeepers oppose spraying. Newer techniques do less harm. “This is Florida. Tolerate a few bites.” — All from a former local and state mosquito control director.
Beekeepers are a PIA in residential neighborhoods. Too bad if a few bees get killed.
I sprayed for roaches in my section 8 housing and it does nothing. they can survive an atomic bomb.
Shaquonda, you tell them. It’s not they can survive anything; it is the fact that it is their job to bug you. Oops, sorry, I know I lost you when I mentioned a job.
That is why Bill Gates released all those genetically modified skeeters in south florida. Just because he loves all of you so much and the philanthropy of course! Remember it is all for your children! Safe and effective for sure but only after the 2nd dose!
👻 Steve Jobs ghost…you are very funny! I love it when it’s true & funny! 😃
Always have the City Ambassadors Corps be the taste and exposure test dummies. If it kills them we won’t use it. If it doesn’t we just make it stronger.
