Gainesville caregiver arrested for stealing from elderly man

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Aja Valyncia Nelloms, 24, was arrested early this morning and charged with grand theft and theft from a person over 65 after allegedly using the debit card of a man who employed her as a caregiver.

Nelloms was a contractor for an agency that provides caregivers, and one of their clients reported a large amount of money missing from his bank account in November 2022. The agency told a Gainesville Police Department officer that Nelloms was one of two caregivers who had worked with the victim during that time period; caregivers sometimes take clients to the store, but the client is supposed to be with the caregiver at all times to purchase any items.

The victim reported that three cash withdrawals were made from a Publix ATM in the amounts of $202.95, $302.95, and $402.95; three Amazon purchases were made in the amounts of $37.70, $277.92, and $65.96; four CashApp transactions were made in amounts of $300, $8, $25, $25, $65, $15, and $6; and an ATM withdrawal was made at Maa & Paa for $102. The transactions came to $1,836.43.

A detective requested surveillance video from Publix and learned that a black woman wearing scrubs had used the debit card once while in the store with the victim and then had used it by herself. The caregiving agency identified the woman in the video as Nelloms, one of the contractors working with the victim at the time.

Nelloms reportedly confessed to her employer by text message and also admitted to a GPD officer that she had taken the money and that “there was no excuse besides temptation.” She said that she learned the victim’s PIN number the first time she went to Publix with him. She admitted that she had sent funds to family and friends via CashApp, using the victim’s debit card.

Nelloms has a juvenile criminal history and three misdemeanor convictions. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $25,000.

  • People, use a little common sense when trusting your loved ones with these “caregivers.” One look at this 🤡 and anyone should’ve known better.

  • Absolute trash, will steal from their own family if you let them. Take her out of the gene pool.

    • Take her and others like her out of the gene pool. Would fix a lot.

  • POS stealing from old people. I wonder if she used stolen money for those ridiculous fake eye lashes. Good grief.

  • I would not hire a caregiver who resembles a Beyoncé wannabe. Period.

  • This very unfortunate I myself am a caregiver/ companion who runs a successful caregiver business. Caregiving is about giving not taking this situation makes us all look bad. Sorry the gentleman had this bad experience .

    • Don’t let her actions make “you all look bad” it’s people like her that makes others not trust anyone. Sad thing is she’s barely old enough to take care of herself. A lot of young people doesn’t know the value of living right and treating people with respect and could care less. She will have her day, what goes around comes around.

  • Ban her from working with the vulnerable elderly, disabled, and mentally incompetent.

  • Looking at this…thing…I never would have expected her to steal from someone. No way!!!
