Gainesville City Commission agrees to consider anti-ICE petition

BY JENNIFER CABRERA
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – During the afternoon session of their June 18 meeting, the Gainesville City Commission agreed to discuss an anti-ICE petition at their July 16 meeting.
General Public Comment
During the General Public Comment period, about 15 people, many of whom described themselves as Democratic Socialists or members of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the Gainesville Chapter of National Women’s Liberation, or the United Faculty of Florida, urged the City Commission to make a public commitment to oppose ICE and 287(g) agreements.
Excerpt from GINI petition: “We, as a community, stand in opposition to the presence of a DHS ICE administrative office here in Gainesville or anywhere else in Alachua County, and we reject the participation of Gainesville Police Department, the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, and all other local and state law enforcement agencies in our county in 287(g) agreements that deputize state and local law enforcement to carry out federal immigration enforcement.”
The Gainesville Immigrant Neighbor Inclusion Initiative (GINI) has collected 2,500 signatures on a petition that reads, “We, the undersigned residents of Alachua County and Gainesville, believe in due process, public safety, and the dignity of every person. As a diverse community that relies on and is made up of thousands of immigrants, we care about all of our neighbors, our families, and the places we call home. We, as a community, stand in opposition to the presence of a DHS ICE administrative office here in Gainesville or anywhere else in Alachua County, and we reject the participation of Gainesville Police Department, the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, and all other local and state law enforcement agencies in our county in 287(g) agreements that deputize state and local law enforcement to carry out federal immigration enforcement. Therefore, we request that City leaders announce opposition to ICE offices in Gainesville, as was recently done in Orange County. Reiterate the Commission’s commitment to immigrant safety and inclusion, as outlined in the Gainesville Immigrant Neighbor Inclusion Initiative blueprint for immigrant inclusion. Advocate that the Gainesville Police Department continue to serve the best interests of the community, public safety, and their department by not signing on to a 287(g) agreement, speak out against the indiscriminate and destructive arrests of our neighbors, joining the voices of countless community members, and even the recent critique from DeSantis-appointed sheriffs of Florida’s own state board of immigration enforcement, and develop policies that secure all of our neighbors.”
Commission discussion
After the speakers had finished, Commissioner Casey Willits said he would look into the petition before the Commission’s next meeting on July 16, and he asked for it to be placed on the agenda for that meeting. He said the petition was “really just a statement of our values, of what we oppose, and we oppose all illegal action, and this really focuses around an established pattern, which is hard to argue against, that there are issues and people’s rights have been violated. We see this because there’s lawsuits, and ICE and other 287(g) enforcement agencies continuously get told, ‘You have broken the law, you’ve get to undo this, you have to return somebody,’ so this is just right in line with holding our other government partners accountable to say we oppose this.”
Willits also said he would look into the City’s progress on providing language access for non-English-speakers.
Commissioner Bryan Eastman: “We are uniquely susceptible to having our community be taken over by fear.”
Commissioner Bryan Eastman said the petition is a “statement of where we stand as a community, and there’s no question that what we hear from our community members, what we see in our community, is just awful, and there are a lot of stories of people that have been abused by the system. And for every one of those, I know there’s 10 other folks that are scared about them being the next one that’s being taken… Our community is so heavily dependent on bringing the brightest minds from all around the world here to do the best in research,… and we are uniquely susceptible to having our community be taken over by fear. I think that’s true across Florida.”
Eastman also agreed with Willits that “we need to commit to doing better” at language access.
Commissioner James Ingle: “To do something that brings more scrutiny on an area or more enforcement on an area concerns me…”
Commissioner James Ingle said, “I spent most of my time in this room on that side of the dais, mostly as a labor activist, for workers’ rights and things like this, and obviously there’s a lot of crossover between immigrant rights and workers’ rights. I’m hesitant to do things like this sometimes, because I’m worried that the resolutions are more performative than effective,… and to do something that brings more scrutiny on an area or more enforcement on an area concerns me, because it’s not me that’s going to have to pay those bills… But the people that are out there doing that work are telling me that this is what they need. If this is what they need, how about it?”
Commissioner Desmon Duncan-Walker: “There are things that I think we can discuss reasonably about how we move towards what our responsibilities are, which are to keep everybody safe.”
Commissioner Desmon Duncan-Walker said, “I identify with many of the people that have come out to speak. Many of you are my friends; you’re my comrades. We’ve worked together, we fought, we stood together in the streets, we’ve marched, we’ve rallied. Your voices are so critical in this moment, and to piggyback off of what Commissioner Ingle is saying, I think it is so important for us to move beyond those things that are performative… I think you’ve heard some alluding to the idea that the City is facing some real tough decisions in terms of what our budget will look like, but there are things that I think we can discuss reasonably about how we move towards what our responsibilities are, which are to keep everybody safe.”
Commissioner Ed Book: “When I look at the resolution, there are some things in here that I’m completely uncomfortable with, and they’re mostly the opinion statements, like towards the end…”
Commissioner Ed Book said, “Remember, we’re a community of 150,000, roughly, that local law enforcement, Gainesville Police, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, and both the university and the college treat each other in a way that has respected the rights of others for many, many years, and we have a tremendous, I think, community policing relationship… When I look at the resolution, there are some things in here that I’m completely uncomfortable with, and they’re mostly the opinion statements, like towards the end, but that’s why we’ll come back on July 16.”
Mayor Harvey Ward: “I don’t want us to do something that brings more harm to the community than is already here.”
Mayor Harvey Ward said, “We will address this on the agenda on July 16. My only concern, as I’ve expressed to some of you in the room, is one of your whereas [statements] is, ‘Whereas a primary objective of the City of Gainesville is to protect the public health, safety, and welfare of its residents, businesses, workforce, and visitors.’ Harm reduction is the thing I’m most concerned with in this regard, and I don’t want us to do something that brings more harm to the community than is already here. That’s the only discussion for me where there’s any hesitation whatsoever.”
Ward added, “A very, very conservative sheriff down south can have those discussions with the governor without bringing any extra harm on his community, I think. What our liberal community does is a different discussion.”

What fools. If the “refugee” is here for valid and not invalid reasons, they can wait in line. But currently there’s MILLIONS of illegals who only benefit oligarchs, the very people the libs claim to hate. Elites on both sides of the border benefit from captive labor that cannot unionize, while also driving up housing, crime, insurance — and lowering wages. Then they show severe TDS.

Where should illegal immigrants be?
Just the factual common sense answer please.
“Detention Legal Framework
So just to start with the basics, what is the body of law that governs detention of immigrants? Because most of the time people hear detention, they think cruel and unusual punishment, the Eighth Amendment, but that’s actually not what applies here. So tell us about that framework.
Sure. Thank you so much for having me on, Natalie. So the US Constitution applies to all people on US soil, regardless of their immigration status or their citizenship status.
For non-citizens who are apprehended, their apprehension needs to be governed first by the Fourth Amendment. A person cannot be unreasonably searched or seized. That is a basic protection that all people on US soil have.
Once people are in immigration detention facilities, they must be given basic due process rights that are set forth and protected in the Fifth Amendment’s Due Process Clause. And all non-citizens are also protected by the First Amendment, so they shouldn’t be retaliated against because of their speech. With regard to conditions in immigration detention facilities, there is the Fifth Amendment’s Due Process Clause, and then there are additional agency standards that detention centers must meet.”

How about you instead of running your mouth about other people beliefs about these illegals in our country post some pictures with an illegal setting at your dining room table with your family eating show them sitting in your couch talking to your family otherwise you just running your mouth to hear yourself tall
“Americans largely disapprove of the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as recent enhanced enforcement operations spread to new cities across the country, a new PBS News/NPR/Marist Poll found. A majority say ICE is making Americans less safe, and a growing number believe the agency’s actions have gone too far.
Meanwhile, anti-ICE protests that have grown in size and visibility in recent weeks are viewed by a majority of Americans as mostly legitimate and not unlawful.

“….As of June 14, ICE had booked into detention 204,297 individuals (since October 1, 2024, the start of fiscal year 2025). Of those book-ins, 65 percent, or 133,687 individuals, had no criminal convictions. Moreover, more than 93 percent of ICE book-ins were never convicted of any violent offenses. About nine in ten had no convictions for violent or property offenses. Most convictions (53 percent) fell into three main categories: immigration, traffic, or nonviolent vice crimes. “On January 7, 2026, an ICE agent killed an American citizen. Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother living in Minneapolis, was shot to death in her vehicle by ICE agent Jonathan Ross. Good’s death is now ruled a homicide by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner. Since an ICE agent committed the killing, the U.S. Attorney’s Office claimed exclusive federal jurisdiction and blocked Minnesota state officials from obtaining evidence.
On January 24, 2026, another American citizen was killed during an ICE operation. Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse also from Minneapolis, was shot to death in the street by a yet-unnamed agent. Federal authorities have described the shooting as an act of self-defense, but multiple videos of the encounter appear to conflict with that account, showing Pretti unarmed and being subdued at the time he was shot. This analysis is being published in the aftermath of the incident, while much about it is under investigation and still unknown. ..”

Jazz: don’t interfere with a cop when they’re doing their job!
Got it?
Do you understand that?
Do you know what P.O.P means?
FAFO
If someone hypothetically does that, it means they can kill you and the incident details and the cops name are hidden by the feds from review? Is that in Russia or N Korea?

The thumbs down responses here to facts, as well as a video of Pretti performing a hosptial memorial for a veteran, prove how hopelessly out of touch these right wing fanatics, MAGA imbeciles – and racists – are from most Americans and residents of this county and major city.
Stand up to injustice that is the way to preserve democracy. Police and governments are not infallible, we must not remain silent.
And why aren’t illegal immigrants doing that in their home countries?
How many were in these United States illegally?
Considering who did the pole (PBS), I highly doubt it’s accuracy.
Jazzy Eastman… you frequently denigrate sources that are contrary to any liberal propaganda (anything outside of your groupthink) so allow me to laugh at YOUR source for your poll. “..a new PBS News/NPR/Marist Poll found..” hahahahahahaha. That is literally one of the dumbest posts you’ve ever offered.
So, you’re going to have a conversation on whether or not to break federal or state immigration laws by refusing to locally assist those officers. And your catalyst is a petition. I would say the commission needs to get out of the tarot card business and focus on the real pressing issues of the city in the present. To me these actions contribute to the fear you say exists in our community. Are you guys looking for some more state intervention? That scares me.
And Mr. Willits? Do you intend preemptive action prior to something actually happening here because it has happened elsewhere? YOU are going to hold other government partners accountable for doing their job? That sounds very familiar. Perhaps we shouldn’t burn any more bridges for awhile.
How is the commission involved in the tarot card business?
They are predicting the future ALL THE TIME and reframing the past to suit the predictions. It hasn’t worked out very well to anyone actually paying attention to facts instead of political talking points. I also believe that many more citizens (as opposed to illegal immigrants) are starting to recognize the truth lies
elsewhere.
Duncan-Walker said, “I identify with many of the people that have come out to speak. Many of you are my friends; you’re my comrades.” ~ She meant to say ‘Komrades’.
Eastman piped in, “I know there’s 10 other folks that are scared about them being the next one that’s being taken…” ~ Here’s a note for that idiot: if they’re here legally, there’s nothing to be afraid of.
Keeping in line with the above-mentioned idiocy, Ingle went with his word salad mash of “people that are out there doing that work are telling me that this is what they need. If this is what they need, how about it?” ~ How about you can’t prevent a government agency from performing their duties.
Once again, a few $0ci@li$t psychos are doing everything they can to determine city and county policy. I can’t wait to see anyone involved in, promoting, or instigating any acts that prevent ICE officers from performing their duties get arrested and charged with the appropriate felony charges.
Why should we worry about protecting someone who is here illegally?
Because to know if they are here illegally or not, due process is needed. ICE is unfamiliar with due process.
Due process?
The illegals didn’t do due process coming in.
I
Your stupidity amazes me..
That’s what decent people do, cruelty and maltreatment that has been ongoing is unacceptable
Since the commissioners are so concerned about illegal activities, here’s a couple of links.
To report local governments or agencies in Florida that you believe are blocking or not supporting ICE-related activities (which is against Florida law):

To report illegals (who are breaking federal law, by the way):
ICE tip form: https://www.ice.gov/webform/ice-tip-form
Illegal aliens do NOT belong. Freeloaders do NOT belong. Immigrate legally and pay your OWN way legally.
I am not surprised at all the majority of the virtue signaling commission wants to act this way. The same commission where the state has to manage the utility because they cannot do it in a fiscally responsible way now want to disregard immigration laws.
However, should one of these drunk illegals drive an F150 full of roofing and drywall tools head on into your family member these same people will cry that ‘something should have been done about it, why was this illegal allowed to remain here’.
There’s 150,000 people in Alachua County and you gonna bow down to a group of 2500 signatures, that’s you don’t know all came from alachua County everyone you are a disgusting POS you took an oath, up hold the constitution and bing here illegally in this country as a violation of the constitution
Each Commissioner who goes against State and Federal Immigration Laws should be tried for treason. They are abiding illegals and we as citizens should be outraged by how inept these Commissioners are.
We can’t ask questions and if we do we’re labeled treasonous? I beg to differ, given the blatant corruption and mismanagement by this administration
“private prison corporations wield enormous power in the immigration detention space. There are two private prison companies, CoreCivic and GeoGroup that hold incredibly lucrative contracts with the federal government to run immigration detention centers across the country.
The Dilley facility, the family detention facility that I’ve referenced a few times, it’s run by CoreCivic. CoreCivic has an annual contract with ICE to run the Dilley facility, and in return, CoreCivic is paid about $180 million annually for the Dilley facility alone. So these are incredibly lucrative contracts.
And the private for-profit prison corporations have an invested interest in locking up as many people as possible. So they have enormous lobbying power, and they’re using their lobbying power to put people into our government, both at the state level and at the federal level, who will crack down on immigration and try to lock up as many people as possible, and make offenses that previously were not deemed offenses to be something that results in people being locked up because it’s good for the company’s bottom lines.”

“Gainesville Immigrant Neighbor Inclusion Initiative (GINI) has collected 2,500 signatures on a petition that reads, “We, the undersigned residents of Alachua County and Gainesville, believe in due process, ..”
Now, send that list of 2500 to the TSA, ATF, FBI, iCE, & the FDLE so that they can be put on the “no fly list” for some “AI, facial recognition due process”… and suspend their US passports and Florida drivers licenses… you want due process? DeSantis & Trump will make sure you get it! Thanks BOCC and C of G for help rounding up the Underground Railroad…we’re a nation of laws .
You’re advocating for this path, not a “We the People” nation.
Some clear historical cases where fascist regimes and authoritarian governments) targeted people specifically for signing petitions or protest letters:
Fascist Italy (1922–1943)
* After Mussolini consolidated power, intellectuals who signed Benedetto Croce’s 1925 counter-manifesto to Gentile’s pro-fascist declaration were blacklisted from academic posts, surveilled by the OVRA secret police, or sent into internal exile (confino) — Carlo Levi and others among them.
Nazi Germany (1933–1945)
* Clergy who signed the 1934 Barmen Declaration and later a 1936 memorandum criticizing Nazi religious and racial policy were arrested. Martin Niemöller, a key signer, spent years in concentration camps.
Since when are Officials Elected by the Unhinged Attempts to Claim unearned valor b y Judging What we want instead of asking Us
Subtract from the GINI signatures all those who don’t have at least one immigrant family living in their house with them. Those signatures are worthless.
I wonder how many are US Citizens and registered voters in Alachua County.
The irony (hypocrisy?) of this petition, while at the same time: “Willits also said he would look into the City’s progress on providing language access for non-English-speakers.”
“Eastman also agreed with Willits that “we need to commit to doing better” at language access.”
WHY?
vote red clean up the bs
Petition my a$$! ICE is federal law that trumps your silly virtual signaling, do-nothing, petition.
These people in Gainesville are true idiots they’re all for all these illegal immigrants but wait wait till one of them rapes or beats one of their family members or does something nasty to somebody they care about.
The city clown group voted in by the clown popuation
“Ward added, ‘A very, very conservative sheriff down south can have those discussions with the governor without bringing any extra harm on his community, I think. What our liberal community does is a different discussion.'”
Translation: “Liberals are likely to bring ‘extra harm’ to their community if things don’t go way. And we’re a liberal community.”
My mom told me when I was a kid…”stay away from trouble!”
They’re looking for trouble..
Anti establishment
The City Commission is already on shaky ground with the State based on their improper handling and battling over GRU along with their prior audit issues. They do not need to bring attention to the City by passing a resolution to not honor federal and state law. It is a bad move to attract the attention of the State and the people of Gainesville will suffer the consequences.
How the conversation went before the meeting: Hiccup Harvey tells the group, we need to find a way to distract people from the trash and fire assessment increases. Lying Brian tells Witless Wilits, I know what to do, let’s go poke the bear again! Ingle tee hees to himself.
I hate election years. 2/3’s of the population turns into morons. Like
clockwork.
Those of us with functioning memories realize that these issues only come to a boil every two or four years. It’s all theater.
She does resemble something from a horror flick.
Ahh, yes, look at that commie heffer…is she a fat Ukrainian from Lauren Poe’s Scam sister city pipeline? Yak Zhe maesh? …that means “ how goes it?”
Send her ruba dupa (fat ass) back to Ukraine 🇺🇦 or wherever Poe’s non profit grift is bringing them in from…
Looks like the Democrats on the City Commission are terrified of these radicals, and they should be—these people are completely unhinged and utterly amoral. “The ends justify the means” is their mantra, and there is literally nothing they won’t do as long as they can convince themselves that their cause is righteous.
Hint: if your cause was truly righteous, you wouldn’t need to lie. Legal immigrants are not being targeted for deportation, only illegal immigrants. Any person that claims otherwise this is fundamentally dishonest and a propagandist. ICE is clearly following their mandate and following the due process set forth by law and by the authority of the Executive branch.
You may not like it. You may personally think that “due process” should include free hotel accommodations and an annual pass to Disney World, but that doesn’t mean a damn thing. This is all just shallow virtue signaling for social media points, and/or trying to excuse the criminal activity of others.
