Gainesville Duo wins silver at U.S. Open Pickleball Championships
Press release from Dr. Narsing Rao
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – What began just one year ago as a casual hobby has transformed into a national milestone for two local residents.
Dr. Narsing Rao, a 51-year old physician, and Dr. Abhinav Alakshendra, a 44-year old associate professor at the University of Florida, recently secured a silver medal at the 2026 U.S. Open Pickleball Championships in Naples. Competing in the prestigious 40–49 age division during the tournament’s 10th-anniversary edition (April 11–18, 2026), the duo navigated a formidable field of athletes from across North America.
This year’s championships drew unprecedented crowds and high-profile talent, including tennis legend Andre Agassi and pickleball world champion Anna Leigh Waters, further signaling the sport’s rapid rise on the global stage.
For Dr. Rao, the path to the medal stand was anything but straightforward. He had never considered himself an athlete, making the achievement all the more remarkable. Just four weeks after picking up a paddle for the first time last year, he suffered a shattered wrist. While such an injury might have sidelined most beginners, Rao’s recovery became the catalyst for a determined comeback.
Alongside a dedicated group of seven friends, the pair logged countless hours refining their game. What began as a new hobby quickly evolved into a serious competitive pursuit built on grit, friendship, persistence, and long hours on the court. Despite a shortage of competitive public courts in southwest Gainesville, they found a home for their high-intensity matches at the 300 Club.
Their silver-medal finish is more than a personal milestone. It is the kind of breakthrough that puts Gainesville on the world pickleball map. To sustain the momentum of Gainesville’s expanding pickleball community, there is an increasing need for dedicated infrastructure, particularly in southwest Gainesville.
Sometimes the best sports stories are not about lifelong athletes or carefully charted careers. Sometimes they are about two friends who discovered a game, refused to quit, and achieved something extraordinary. For Rao and Alakshendra, that journey has already taken them to one of pickleball’s biggest stages — and it may be only the beginning.

Congrats!
Hurray for both of these great picklers!!!
