Gainesville man arrested after allegedly shooting at GRU employees, 7-hour stand-off
Press release from Gainesville Police Department
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On Wednesday December 11, Gainesville Police Department (GPD) officers successfully resolved a seven-hour standoff at 2917 NE 10th Drive that began after shots were fired at Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) workers.
At approximately 1:40 p.m., GRU employees arrived at the residence in clearly marked vehicles and uniforms to address a gas leak. After receiving no response at the door, they entered the back yard to begin repairs. While working on repairs, a shot was fired from inside the residence. A second shot followed, with a worker observing a muzzle flash from a window and hearing the bullet ricochet. The workers immediately evacuated and contacted 911.
Officers who were nearby on an unrelated call responded within moments of hearing the gunfire. Additional units, including the Co-Responder Team, quickly established a perimeter and blocked surrounding streets.
Preliminary investigation identified the homeowner as Carleton Renshaw, 43. Family members described Renshaw as a loner with no social media presence or friends. They confirmed he owned multiple firearms, including a rifle, shotgun, and handgun, and expressed concerns about his behavior.
Drone teams from GPD and Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) provided aerial reconnaissance of the property, which included a concrete bunker in the backyard. Despite repeated public address announcements, Renshaw did not respond.
As the incident progressed, GPD’s Criminal Investigations Division secured a search warrant. SWAT teams from both GPD and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ASO) assembled at a nearby command post. Around 9 p.m., GPD’s armored BearCat vehicle breached the front door, and ASO’s robotic device was deployed to search the interior. The robot’s camera located a rifle and showed Renshaw lying motionless on a bed under blankets.
SWAT officers entered the home and took Renshaw into custody without further incident. He was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation and later brought to the Alachua County Jail with multiple charges for aggravated assault.
The Gainesville Police Department appreciates the collaboration between its units, neighboring partners, and GRU, ensuring a safe resolution. The investigation is ongoing.
Attempted murder. Why not charge him with attempted murder? He fired at people. He had the intent to shoot someone. Criminals need much harsher punishments.
Murder ? They came into his yard he was scared for his safety
Shooting at uniformed utility workers because you’re “scared” and they’re in your yardis horse 💩. They didn’t try and enter his house. Dude is obviously bonkers.
They pulled up to the residence in marked vehicles and official uniforms. Knocked on the door and received no response (at that point they can only ascertain that no one is home) THEN entered the back yard. He had no reason to be “scared” they followed all of the necessary steps to notify him they needed to access his property. If he wasn’t at home and showed up after they began to work, again marked vehicles and uniforms. A normal response would be “Hey, what are you doing in my yard?” not to just start randomly firing.
Let me school you keyboard warriors.
Google the elements of attempted murder in Florida.
They can’t prove his intent was to kill, remember he had the jump on the employees, the shots were meant to scare them away. He didn’t want them on the property.
So the state would probably fail on an attempted murder charge and any good criminal defense lawyer would beat that charge.
I watch your comments and its always funny because your mouth’s testify to your actual ignorance of the law.
Your grammar is indicative of your ignorance of basic English
Though I be rude in speech, but not in knowledge.
Sounds like trespassing, stay of his property
Tis the season….to be coo coo.
He won’t have to worry about his GRU bill anymore.
