Gainesville man arrested after shooting gun into the air at Smokey Bear Park
BY JENNIFER CABRERA
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jalen M Johnson, 19, was arrested this morning and charged with discharging a firearm in public, improper exhibition of a firearm, carrying a concealed firearm without a permit, and aggravated domestic assault after allegedly firing a gun into the air at Smokey Bear Park, 2601 NE 15th Street.
Johnson reportedly agreed to meet a former girlfriend at the park this morning but argued with her after arriving. The woman reportedly took his cell phone and used it to call an Uber so he would leave the park.
However, Johnson allegedly took out a 9mm pistol and fired it to the right of the victim, at which point she gave him his phone back and intended to leave, but she told a Gainesville Police Department Officer that Johnson sat on a park bench and put the gun to his head, so she stayed until the Uber arrived, out of fear that he would kill himself.
The events were reportedly witnessed by multiple people in and around the park, including children.
The officer reported that the Uber was leaving just as she arrived, so she followed the Uber and stopped it at 2400 N. Main Street. She called Johnson out of the vehicle and detained him, then reportedly found the loaded firearm in the back pocket of the passenger seat in the Uber.
Post Miranda, Johnson reportedly admitted taking out his pistol and firing it to get the victim to give his phone back.
Johnson has no local criminal history; bail information is not yet available.

Play dumbass games you get Dumbass Prizes… but yeaaaaah let’s fight to keep guns in the hands of people like this kid.. Florida the land of Freedoms..😬
Considering it was a handgun and he is 19, he probably had it illegally. The concealed permit law in Florida is 21 years old. Responsible gun owners don’t support criminal’s having guns…..
Maybe a new cultural center being built will help him step away from his criminal ways….🤣
Millions of people own guns. 99.9% of gun owners do not commit crimes. Never heard of an NRA member shooting anyone. Let’s keep the freedom and make criminals pay. Chicago: most restrictive gun laws and murder capitol of the U.S.
“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety” Ben Franklin.
Was the gun his? Did he legally obtain it?
They should charge whomever was responsible for giving the gun to him too because knowingly giving a gun to someone who’s not of sound mind is prohibited by federal law. Obviously this guy is not of sound mind…
He prolly stole the gun.
You can pass all the gun laws you want and it won’t effect the criminals you want to keep guns out of their law breaking hands. This criminal is 19 y.o. so he broke the Florida law that has a minimum age of 21 for a gun. So….liberals go ahead and disarm yourselves but let the rest of us have our second amendment right and we will defend ourselves.
He probably never got punished in school because of the equity numbers nonsense. They’ll probably fail to file charges for the same reasons. It should be made clear that it’s not acceptable for kids to have guns even if they never fire them. Firing them in the city limits should result in some real consequences, like 30 days in jail at least, or probably longer than that.
And if he was wearing a mask while firing the gun, the penalty x2.
But was the gun legally purchased, so we can blame NRA, not the District 1 culture like it really is?
This kid had no criminal record. How do you enforce gun laws against people without an arrest.
Stay
