Gainesville man arrested after stabbing girlfriend and stand-off with police

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Chester Lee James, 52, was arrested yesterday morning for stabbing his girlfriend after a stand-off with Gainesville Police Department officers.

Officers responded to an apartment in Southern Pines (the 4000 block of SW 17th Place) at about 10:47 p.m. on Monday, where the victim said she was sitting under a canopy tent outside the front door when her longtime boyfriend, James, came out yelling at her. She said she stood up and immediately felt a sharp pain in her stomach, grabbed at her stomach, and saw blood on her hand. She said she ran away from James toward a group of friends and saw James running back into the apartment.

An officer noted that the victim had a large, deep laceration across her stomach that was consistent with a slashing wound from a knife. She was reportedly in stable condition, but the extent of the injury was being evaluated at the time the report was written.

When officers arrived, James was believed to be inside the apartment, armed with a rifle and a handgun. Officers obtained a warrant, and James was arrested early Tuesday morning after a multi-hour stand-off.

James has been charged with aggravated domestic battery with a deadly weapon. He has 14 felony convictions (one violent) and 20 misdemeanor convictions (five violent); he has served five state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2022. Judge Kristine Van Vorst set bail at $250,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Southern Pines is an ex-luxury student apt. complex annexed by the SWAG blob 👀.

Another longtime repeat offender roped into the ACLUSPLCDNC cult of a “tolerant” college town. 👺💩👿🤡👹

    • The headline should read,

“After Being Put In Jail for the Umpteenth Time, Chester James Won’t Be Participating in the Juneteenth Celebrations.”

      It fits the occasion.

      • Wow that’s really something to say one person doesn’t dictate every black person. And it didn’t happen on the 19th seems a little racist to me but everyone has there own opinion but you should think before you express anything

        • Thanks for your input.

Every Black person didn’t stab his girlfriend and have a stand off with police but Chester did.
Hopefully you have those same thoughts about law enforcement and hopefully other women will feel just a little safer he’s locked up, if only for a day.

If you think he deserves being released after doing what he did to a woman – you may want to readdress your concerns within the community.

    • Seven hours of wasted taxpayers money. Officers stood outside, leaning against their car, wasting hours and hours and hours before they called SWAT. They tried to call Chester out on the loudspeaker over 100 times. It looked like every officer on duty was at the scene up and down the road. GPD handle this totally wrong. Chester was probably flushing. all the drugs during the five hours that the cops were just standing outside leaning against the cars. I imagine that’s why Chester did not get charged with drugs because they were all gone by the time swat got in. One guy escaped and the dog got him.

      • Since you know better than the police how to do their job, you should sign up and show all of us!

  • The more I see these types of stories, I wonder whether some of these criminals think they’re in a jungle somewhere.

    • Maybe prisons should have rehabilitation as a goal instead of punishment and deprivation and violence.
Storming place resulting in an injury would likely be much more costly.
