Gainesville man arrested for attempted murder after victim said gun jammed at close range
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Kenyatta Jermaine Patterson, Jr., 27, was arrested yesterday and charged with attempted murder after a neighbor said Patterson pushed a gun into his side and pulled the trigger, but the gun jammed. The victim said Patterson then hit him in the head with the gun, which fired and expelled a spent casing.
Patterson and the victim live in neighboring buildings at Gardenview Apartments, 2220 SW 34th Street. The victim said he was walking home from the store at about 6:41 p.m. yesterday when Patterson started “trash-talking” him from across the parking lot. He said Patterson yelled, “Do you want me to do you right now?” multiple times.
The victim said Patterson walked toward him, racking the slide of a pistol, then pushed the pistol into the side of his ribs and pulled the trigger. The victim said the gun jammed, and then Patterson hit him in the head with the gun, which went off. The victim said he ran away while calling 911.
The responding Gainesville Police Department Officer noted that the victim had a laceration on his forehead, but the victim wasn’t sure whether the injury was from being hit with the gun or being grazed by a bullet.
A neighbor who knows both the victim and defendant reportedly said she was sitting outside when she heard arguing and saw Patterson walk past with a gun in his hand. She said she heard Patterson say he would shoot the victim, and then she heard a gunshot; she said Patterson walked back to his apartment after the gunshot.
Another witness described Patterson and said he had shot at another man, who ran away.
As officers were canvassing the area, Patterson reportedly came out of his apartment and consented to a search of his apartment. The search reportedly produced a Glock 19 pistol with a 15-round magazine, loaded with 14 rounds; there was a spent casing next to the gun and a holster on the bed.
Post Miranda, Patterson reportedly said he was outside smoking when the victim walked by and he and the victim had argued earlier. He said he walked toward the victim with his gun in his waistband, and the victim said he wasn’t afraid of the gun. He said the victim “flinched” toward him, so he pulled out the gun and swung it at the victim’s neck/shoulder area and accidentally pulled the trigger, firing the gun. He said he never pointed the gun at the victim and denied picking up the spent shell casing. He said he went back to his apartment, unloaded one “unfired bullet,” and put the gun and the unfired round into a drawer.
Patterson was arrested last November and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly threatening to shoot someone who was holding a baby. He was released on $10,000 bail, and the charge was later dropped.
Patterson has a juvenile criminal conviction but no adult convictions. Judge Susan Miller-Jones ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
His name says it all. Kenyatta Pattersons of Alachua County are nothing but a pack of criminals. This little POS is just keeping up the family tradition. Keep dropping charges and he will kill someone.
Bro they aren’t related you act like it’s not normal for ppl to share a name and a not be related
Um I believe they are. Have them do a DNA test and prove me wrong.
I’ve been here a long time. It appears our numbers are up as far as serious crime.

A part of the IMPACT GNV news release:
“Improve access to mental health services, social support, and the arts”
I wonder if this fellow is going to choose any of these options.
I hear watercoloring is very soothing to the soul.
Hmm, type in “2220 SW 34th Street” on google maps and you get a vague pointer at the general area of 34th and SW 20th. Apartment fires, gun crimes, drug arrests, other types of criminal activity seem to crop up alot recently in that general area. I wouldn’t be surprised if Campus CCU abandons the spot entirely and retreats to the (unfortunately temporary) safety of Jonesville.
He obviously isn’t one of those depicted in the GPD presentation.
He’s also one of those who doesn’t deserve to live in society. I’m sure there’s a plot somewhere that he’ll fit in rather than him putting someone else in it.
Thanks, Judge, for the no bail. I would like to see the lenient bail stop….
What the heck are those things growing out of his head?
Safe to say it’s not intelligence or common sense. Evil would be my next guess.
Nah…it’s just stupidity, looks like a spider squatting on his head
They are a symbol identifying the person as a dangerous, arrogant idiot who has no plans except criminal activity.
Chain Gangs instead of AC, TV, Bed and Breakfast would curb this $hi!.
That’s like saying all yt men with combovers are pedophiles stop stereotyping!
WTF is “ Gardenview Apartments, 2220 SW 34th St” now a Section 8 complex, so close to prime real estate? Wasn’t that Piccadilly before?
Bidenomics is really socking it to college towns these days. Next we’ll see pro-Hamas paid astroturf here… oh wait 🤡👹
Seriously?…How do you equate Biden with what is obviously a local decision? And how do you equate Biden with Hamas? Bought your gold sneakers and bible yet..Your boy needs money for his multitude of lawyers he is supporting.
Yep I got mine. At least Trump doesn’t have to wear “DUMB DUMB don’t fall down sneakers.” The way Biden has cursed the leadership of Israel he is pro Hamas. Watch all the illegal court case go away before summer. They are falling one by one. the one thing that is true is that this local decisions being made are by Biden `like minded” people who belong in a mental hospital or riding the short bus.
Thanks to some progressive, “I feel guilty,” commissioners, those enclaves will likely be in a neighborhood near you soon.

Are the idiots in the Prosecutor’s office going to drop the charges on this one too. Doesn’t committing a crime with a firearm include a 5 year minimum prison sentence?
It’s past time for our governor to step in and fire some judges and prosecutors.
Time for all you “right” leaning, throw em in jail, types ,to move to Texas. In case you didn’t know it,Gainesville is solidly Blue. Why is it, your god, who is facing over 90 felonies isn’t on your “hit list”? Hypocrisy maybe?
Kangaroo courts don’t count Jeffy. Funny how when Clinton and others paid for NDAs that was totally legal. Hiding classified documents is fine as a Senator or a Vice President but not a President? Your hypocrisy knows no bounds.
Except that the current future felon is charged in 3 states. Has already been convicted twice for sexual assault and owes for that. And Access Hollywood you hear from his own lips how he treats women. His love for N. Korea and his love letters to Kim as well as his good friend Putin make him the perfect candidate for no nothing Gomers
The funny thing about that is that _everybody_ can see Mr. Trump’s human foibles and failings and yet over half the country would rather have him in the presidency than anyone the democrats run. This includes a ton of people that voted for Obama twice.
Another lie!! He has NEVER been convicted of sexual assault. Not only that but one of the accusers can’t even remember the year or even month it happened. He has been sued for it and a biased Jury awarded money that will never have to be paid because it will never get passed appeal.
Joe Biden has been accused too but you ignore that don’t you …
Well Jeff old boy, thanks for my laugh of the day. You left leaning “let ’em do what they please” types need to move to NYC. I’m a native and I am conservative and I’m not going anywhere.
PS the only reason G’ville is blue is the University professors and students.
