GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Corey Bryce Goston, 31, was arrested last night after allegedly stalking the mother of his child, entering her apartment with a key he wasn’t supposed to have, and running from police officers.
A Gainesville Police Department (GPD) officer reported that at about 1:00 a.m. on April 11, Goston started banging on the victim’s front door at Brighton Park Apartments (4415 SW 34th Street), which woke her, her children, and multiple neighbors. The victim told him to leave from an upstairs window, but Goston reportedly yelled that there was a man in the apartment and made other derogatory statements about the victim.
Goston eventually left, but he allegedly returned at about 3:30 a.m. and began banging on the door again. A neighbor came outside and said she was calling the police, and Goston reportedly said he didn’t care because a man was sleeping in his preschool daughter’s bed; he then allegedly unlocked the door with a key.
Goston had reportedly returned the victim’s key a few weeks before the incident, so she speculated that he must have made a copy before he returned the key. Goston allegedly ran into the apartment, opening multiple rooms in his search for a man, and when he didn’t find anyone, he reportedly tried to get in bed with his preschool daughter.
The victim called 911, and Goston left the area before law enforcement arrived; he reportedly also called 911 and said he would meet officers near the front of the complex, but he was not there when officers arrived.
At about 9 p.m. on April 11, Goston allegedly returned to the apartment and banged on the door again while making derogatory remarks about the victim. The victim called 911, but Goston again left the area before officers arrived.
On the morning of April 12, the victim left her apartment with her daughter, and while she was gone, a neighbor called 911 to report that Goston had returned and had again entered the apartment with a key.
On the afternoon of April 12, the victim came home and reported that Goston pulled into the parking lot behind her and started yelling at her. One of Goston’s family members, who had been at the victim’s apartment, reportedly tried to get him to leave, and he eventually left.
Several of Goston’s family members reportedly told a GPD officer that they had called 911 at their home during the evening of April 11, wanting deputies to transport Goston to a psychiatric facility for a Baker Act hold, but they said the Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies did not believe that Goston met the criteria for a Baker Act.
At about 7:16 p.m. on April 12, two GPD officers were parked at Brighton Park, knowing that there was a good chance that Goston would return. They heard a vehicle entering the apartment complex at a high rate of speed and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle drove through the parking lot of the apartment complex at a high rate of speed and quickly parked. Goston allegedly got out of the vehicle, looked back at the officers, and ran behind an apartment building before jumping two fences.
Goston was later arrested at a standalone emergency room near Parker Road.
Post Miranda, Goston did not want to make any statements.
Goston has been charged with burglary of a dwelling, fleeing with lights and sirens activated, and stalking. He has no criminal history, and Judge Susan Miller-Jones ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial. However, the State Attorney’s Office later decided against seeking pre-trial detention, and on April 17, Judge Denise Ferrero set bail at $200,000
