Gainesville man arrested for cutting passerby on Newberry Road, battering officers
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jamiel Spencer, 32, was arrested yesterday morning after allegedly attacking a passerby with a knife on Newberry Road and then hitting and biting officers.
At about 7:37 a.m. on December 27, Gainesville Police Department officers responded to the 6000 block of Newberry Road, where the victim said he was walking out of McDonald’s when Spencer approached him from the bus stop nearby with “crazy eyes”; Spencer was allegedly holding a knife and said, “I will kill you.”
When the victim tried to back away, Spencer allegedly grabbed his forearm and head-butted his forehead, then cut the top of the victim’s hand with the knife.
The arresting officer reported that the victim had a small laceration on his hand and an abrasion on his forehead. The victim reportedly got on an RTS bus to escape; he said that when he pushed Spencer away, he grabbed a Trulieve ID that was hanging from his neck. The ID was in the name of “Jamal Spencer.”
The responding officers found Spencer, who matched the description provided by the victim, on the south side of the road; when they spoke to Spencer, he reportedly said he had called 911. When they asked if his name was “Jamal,” he allegedly started calling out other names and phrases and said, “How do you know my name?”
The arresting officer reported that Spencer had a sheathed knife on his hip.
As the second officer approached Spencer from behind to detain him, the first officer approached him from the front, and Spencer allegedly turned around and started punching the second officer. The two officers reportedly took Spencer to the ground, but he allegedly refused to show his right hand, resisting and kicking the first officer.
After additional units arrived, Spencer was escorted to a patrol vehicle but head-butted the second officer in the face and bit him on the bicep. The officer reportedly suffered scratches and abrasions on his face and a deep bite on his arm.
Post Miranda, Spencer reportedly did not want to make a statement about the incident with the first victim. He was identified with the Trulieve ID, and the identity was confirmed with his Florida ID.
Spencer has local traffic offenses going back to 2012 and one misdemeanor conviction for driving without a valid license. Judge Luis Bustamante ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s office to hold him without bail until trial.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Another pillar of society.
When are to Wokesville , Gainesville voters along with the City Commissioners and staff going to be charged as accessories to these everyday crimes against law abiding citizens? They vote for it and we suffer.
He needs help… But probably won’t get what he really needs…
Glad the guy he went off on escaped with only minor physical injuries, (and probably some trauma/stress stuff…)
Hoping for the best, but this is likely to get worse and worse…. 😞
What he needs is to try attacking a 2A person with that knife, and get put out of his misery
You are right. It never seems to occur that way locally.
why don’t you help us out and hang out in these areas and take care of all the issues here in town.
That is atypical of a liptard to say.
First of all that is my brother and he deals with mental health issues that law enforcement already knows about previously. Second putting him out of his misery is a threat and I am also licensed to carry so that factor is unlikely. So understand that he was not in his right mind during the altercation. My brother needs help and if you are not in a position to acquire the help don’t speak what you don’t know.
Needs help? The only thing this idiot needs is to be physically incapacitated to the point he cannot hurt anyone else. Help…lol.
They (the drugs addicts, including the homeless drug addicts) stay up all night and do hard drugs. That’s what was happening every night at the ‘encampment’ on SE 4th Place. That probably explains the guy acting strangely outside the Starbuck’s at 4:45 a.m. But the clueless locals will wring their hands and say “Oh, they must have psychological conditions and they need Treatment!” No, they are using hard drugs like bath salts and fentanyl, and they should be punished so that they and others don’t continue the same behaviors.
id love to bring back hard labor camps for these a holes, im sooooo sick of these repeat offenders, why do we tolerate this crap ?
A human bite is very dangerous. I hope the officer is OK and that he presses charges.
Why are people like this running loose on the streets? Oh, yeah, I forgot, they closed all the asylums and now these folks are homeless, on the streets, or in jail. Way to go, that’s much better than being safe and fed and medicated in an asylum…s/
So true. I cannot wait until 6000 west Newberry Road is safely inside the middle of Springs County. They will show woke Gainesville how to hold thousands of mental patients like Mr. Spencer in asylums, and show the libs how to pay for the enormous cost with no taxes. Please secede soonest.
The Legislative Delegation meeting is January 9 at Santa Fe. Clemons and Perry have been replaced, but Republicans Johnson and McClain will be there. I fully expect Tim Marden, Republican Chair of Alachua County, to appeal to the GOP to have the Legislature create Springs County. Marden, for those who tuned in late, is the spokesmouth and Der Leader of the Springs County movement. Do it. I know you are busy as a Newberry city commissioner involved in showing us how to bankrupt a city trying to run a charter school you stole from Alachua County, but when you get your Springs County you get ALL the schools to pay for.
“the victim said he was walking out of McDonald’s when Spencer approached him from the bus stop nearby with “crazy eyes”; Spencer was allegedly holding a knife and said, “I will kill you.”
Watch out for those ‘crazy eyes’ as there are plenty of them out there welcomed by our sanctuary city/county commissioner idiots.
Are you guys bots because you say the same comments On every arrest. Everyone is a bum etc but the guy was identified by his work id
