Gainesville man arrested for domestic battery after multi-hour search

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – James Cleveland Perry, 61, was arrested yesterday morning for domestic battery and false imprisonment after a multi-hour search.

The victim told Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies that Perry had hit her at about 3:53 a.m. on July 15; she said they had been dating and living together for about a year.

The victim reportedly said that after Perry hit her, she tried to leave, but he put his arm across the doorway and told her she wasn’t allowed to leave; because of his size, she said, she was afraid to try to leave, but she told Perry she was going to call the police, and he took her phone and said, “You aren’t calling anybody.” She was eventually able to escape, and she ran to a neighbor’s home to call 911.

Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 1000 block of SW 59th Terrace and reported that the victim’s injuries included a swollen and bruised eye and lacerations on her face, consistent with being hit in the face or head.

Deputies made public address announcements outside the victim’s home and eventually cleared the residence after receiving no response. A search of the surrounding area began after deputies determined that Perry was not inside the residence.

At about 10:30 a.m., Perry was found in the 1000 block of SW 61st Street and taken into custody.

While speaking with a deputy, Perry reportedly said he had been with the victim at the time of the incident and that they had been drinking when she became verbally hostile and “fell over” several times, due to her drunken state. Post Miranda, Perry reportedly denied any of the victim’s allegations.

Perry, who is described as homeless in a court document, has been charged with obstructing justice by hindering communication with law enforcement, false imprisonment, and domestic battery. He has 21 felony convictions (non-violent) and 23 misdemeanor convictions (non-violent); he has served three state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2021. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $150,000 and ordered a mental health evaluation.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • These Appointed Deputies. And Law Enforcement Of All Kinds Need To Stop Being Against “Females” And Always Siding With “Males”. It Is And Has Always Been Totally Obvious That Law Enforcement vIn Gainesville Florida Alachua County Look Down Upon Women Of All Ages. Their Body Language And Attitudes Clearly Show No Respect For A Female. Always Turning A Female Victim Into The Criminal. The Perpetrator. One Reason For This Type Of Attitude Towards Woman And Girls Is Because Of A Homosexual 🧠 Brain. Sincerely, July 2025

    • I would argue against this. Most law enforcement officers reciprocate the attitudes they are presented with and many will still be cordial to some of the belligerent examples as a sign of professionalism. I have never had any issues with an officer because I treat them with respect.

      • Bowel Movement 101 ( BM101) Sorry To Hear Your Always Getting Arrested. However You Never Have Any Issues Because You Show Such Respect And Receive Such Respect In Return. What A Crock Of **it.

  • This Black Man Would Not Use The Term “Verbally Hostile” When Describing The Victims( A Woman) Attitude To A ACSD. As Stated In The LEO Report by The Arresting (Officer’s). Officer’s Need To Write The Exact Words That The Person Says In Their Deputy Written Report And Stop Trying To Always Seem To The World Like They’re Aristotal Or One Of The Kings Round Table Court . The City of Gainesville Alachua County Need To Train And Select And Hire A All Female Squad Of Deputy Sheriff’s. Intermingling Female and Male Squad Members Of Law Enforcement Is The Dumbest Underground Police Human Resource Department Crap Ever Conceived. This Also Correct For The Gainesville Police Department. Hire A Female Squad And A Male Squad Of Police Officers And Deputy Sheriff’s. This Cutey Cuteness Between Male and Female Deputies and GPD And Fire And Rescue Employees Is Disgusting To Observe By Church Members And Business Men Of Gainesville Florida Alachua County. Sincerely, love ya dearly not queerly.

This Could Qualify As Letting Everyone On God’s Green Earth Know That He Has Homosexual Tendencies. A Homosexual Brain. This To Show Bums Who Have No Job That He, The Deputy Butters His Toast Side Ways. This Was The Last Time I Ever Donated Clothing To Grace Market Homeless Shelter For The Poor And Abused. This Particular Incident Happened In Years Previous To July 2025. My Moto Is Do Not Trust Any Deputy Sheriff’s Or Gainesville Police Officers. Do Not Bother Calling 911 Emergency Assistance For Emergency Help. Handle The Situation Yourself. Thanks. Arrive Alive

  • July 2025 The Above States That The Court Described Mr. Perry As “Homeless”. If Mr. Perry Has A Birth Certificate He Is Not Homeless. The Country, State, City He Was Birthed In Is Considered His Home. His Homeland. Why Don’t You “High” Officials Stop Calling People Names. Especially In Writing. Placing Bullying Name Tags On People. Oh, Look He’s Homeless, He’s Jobless, He’s Ugly, He’s Too Fat. Why Don’t You City And County Employees Grow Up. You Place “Name Tags” Like “Homeless” on People Who’s Homes and Apartments Have Burned To The Ground by A House Fire. You Call A Person “Homeless” Who’s Mobile Home Was Destroyed In A Tornado. But Is Gainfully Employed At Krogers Supermarket. Homeless Is A Hateful Abusive Bullying “Noun”. Stop Using The Word Homeless To Get City And County Funding. Shame On You People.

  • Deputy Sheriff’s/ Gainesville Alachua County Florida Police Officers And Fire And Rescue. These Employees Of Such Of The City And The County And Of Gainesville Florida Alachua County Need And Should Show Kindness And Humanity By Saying Hello To People When They Are In The Publix Grocery Store Shopping For Food. Say Good Afternoon Sir. To The Grocery Store Cashier. To The Bakery Girl Say Hi, Hello How Ya Doing. Why Must These Uniform Wearing Employees Be So Hard, So Uncaring, So Unhappy Looking. This Part Of The Reason They Are Not Liked, Not Respected, Not Trusted To Save A Person’s Life. To Stand Up For A Innocent Man Or Woman Who Has Wronged No One. Where Is Shiverly. Where Is Trust. Where Is Kindness And Fairness. Thanks

    • That would be chivalry not “shiverly”. Unless Shiverly is someone’s name.

PS Had a uniformed High Springs policeman, hug me because I thanked him for the job he does.
First we shook hands then he said “oh just gimme a hug” and there we stood a black cop and a white woman hugging each other in Publix.
I thanked a deputy sheriff for his service and he all but ignored me. All this to say, like in everything else, it depends on the individual but I am grateful to all LEO’s for the job they do.
