Gainesville man arrested for DUI after crashing into another car in Zaxby’s drive-thru

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – John William Reger, 62, was arrested yesterday after allegedly crashing into the rear of a vehicle in the Zaxby’s drive-thru while impaired.

Gainesville Police Department responded to a report that a vehicle was rear-ended in the drive-thru of the Zaxby’s on NW 43rd Street. The crash caused significant damage to the vehicle that was hit, which was stopped at the time to place an order.

The officer reported that he smelled alcohol when he approached Reger and that Reger had slurred speech, stumbled getting out of his vehicle, swayed while standing, and handed the officer three different papers when asked for his driver’s license. Reger reportedly told the officer that his brakes didn’t work and that he was going 2 mph at the time of the crash. He reportedly denied drinking any alcoholic beverages.

The officer reported that Reger refused the field sobriety exercises and was arrested for DUI. Breath samples were both reported at 0.213, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08.

Reger has a prior DUI and was convicted of reckless driving with alcohol in 2019. He has been charged with DUI with damage to property and is being held on $10,000 bail with a requirement for a transdermal alcohol detector before release.
