Staff report

Updated on March 6, 2025, with the disposition of the case and a quote from the defendant.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – All charges in the case described below have been dropped, and Jocelyn (Jay) Brutus sent the following statement: “I never pointed a gun at my former fiancée, the mother of my children. The incident in question actually involved an altercation between myself and her six time convicted criminal boyfriend,… who was on probation for prior offenses, abusing her daily and hitting my child. I confronted [her boyfriend] after witnessing his physical abuse of both my former fiancée and my children. The false accusations were made by my ex-fiancée six hours later to protect [her boyfriend] from facing legal consequences and potentially violating his probation. She waited several hours before filing a false sworn complaint against me.”

Original article:

Jocelyn Brutus, 35, was arrested last night and charged with domestic aggravated assault and child abuse without great bodily harm after allegedly pointing a gun at his ex-girlfriend in the presence of a child.

Brutus and the victim had reportedly been arguing on Thursday when Brutus went to her Woodland Park residence to continue the argument. At about 4:30 p.m., he reportedly left her residence in his car, circled the block, and then came back. He allegedly got out of his car, walked up to the victim, and pointed a gun at her head. A young child reportedly saw this, and the responding Gainesville Police Department officer noted that the child could potentially suffer mental injury as a result of seeing Brutus point a gun at the woman. The woman reportedly told the officer that she was shocked and scared when she saw the gun, but Brutus left after she yelled at him.

A witness reportedly told the officer that Brutus said “You’re dead” to the woman after he went back to his car.

Brutus has no local criminal history. Judge Robert Groeb set bail at $100,000.

  • That’s his name? Then his parents wanted him to fight and land in jail

  • I guess he couldn’t resist going back. Looks like he would have been fine if he kept driving. Dumb choice

  • Jocelyn??? With a name like that, he might have some new shower buddies.

  • Isn’t this a common practice nowadays? Bidenomics is making these civil and domestic offenses fill up our abuse shelters. That’s the news.

    • Put on your gold sneakers and his bible, that I’m sure you purchased, and go preach it to the choir..Every comment you make is Biden this, Biden that..it gets old. And doesn’t add anything to the story at hand

  • No child deserves this. These females should make better choices in the males in their life. Sad because the cycle will continue for the child the female will probably want to drop the charges. The State Attorney will then have to lower the charges.

  • He will get deferred prosecution and then probably get accepted at Yale

  • This man is crazy, he walked around with the pew pew in his waist at all times, he had multiple large pew pews in the back of his SUV. Also, he has about 6 kids, he had custody of 2, so where are they now?? He is Haitian and believes he does no wrong. I do know he hates his name Joceyln lol he goes by Jay.. He worked night shift at Walmart on Waldo Rd. Talked to MULTIPLE females and even took a few in his car from time to time on “break”.

I hope the woman and child get the help they need.
