Gainesville man arrested for punching stranger, then punching an officer
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Demetrius Lashod Cunningham, 25, was arrested last night and charged with unarmed robbery, two counts of aggravated assault on an officer, resisting an officer with violence, resisting an officer without violence, and marijuana possession after allegedly punching a stranger, then punching one officer and spitting on another.
At about 7:15 p.m. last night, Cunningham allegedly approached the first victim outside the Publix at 1302 N. Main Street and told him, “You are not a gangster.” The victim told a Gainesville Police Department officer that he was not a gangster and did not understand why Cunningham was saying that. The victim said Cunningham punched him in the face approximately 12 times before taking his phone from his pants pocket and running away with it.
An officer found Cunningham walking in the 900 block of NE 2nd Street and engaged in a short foot pursuit before Cunningham allegedly punched the officer twice in the head, knocking the officer to the ground. Additional officers arrived and took him into custody. On the way to the jail, Cunningham allegedly spit on another officer.
A search incident to arrest reportedly produced 2.19 grams of marijuana in Cunningham’s pocket.
Cunningham has five felony convictions (three violent) and four misdemeanor convictions (two violent). He has served two state prison sentences, with his most recent release on August 19, 2023. Judge Walter Green set bail at $45,000.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Wonder how many parents had a positive role in his upbringing? Also curious whether he graduated from school or was another casualty of our school board’s discipline policies.
What’s evident is his total lack of respect for rules and authority.
That ain’t just a lack of respect, it’s deeply rooted hatred and resentment of authority. Being an unintelligent failure your whole life tends to do that to a person
People have a choice in their decision-making. They need to pay for their crimes. Tired of people making excuses for criminals.
He probably has siblings who turned out fine. Lucifer picks the weakest of the litters.
Why fault the parents. You could teach a child 1000 things & they’ll do it however they want to. I know of him & his upbringing definitely wasn’t taught this if you shall know. Drugs plays a major role in his actions & it’s been like that for some time now. There’s no real help here in Gainesville for getting clean. Learn to not be so quick to point your fingers. I’m sure you’re not squeaky clean yourself.
There is help in Gainesville. In case you missed it, can’t help those who don’t want to be helped.
People like this and those like you who make excuses make it easy to point fingers.
9 prior convictions, 6 violent. That’s better than 50%. He doesn’t belong in society – ANY SOCIETY.
Officers should have just saved any future encounters and put him down.
Incredibly low bond for those crimes!! Another gem from Walter Green!!
Green is a failure and a discredit to the court system. I’m surprised it wasn’t a lower bond.
One of these days him and a lot more is going to come across Someone who is not afraid to use their 2A rights and Florida SYG law then we will not have to worry about getting out with a low bail
That fool is looking at prison releasee reoffender sanctions at sentencing: mandatory maximum sentence and no gain time nor early release.
If the charges don’t get dropped.
Thank you for the laugh. Just imagining this crook trying to enunciate the six distinct syllables of “You are not a gangster” lies somewhere between Potter Stewart defining pornography and Christopher Walken reading the lyrics of “Aww Skeet Skeet” as spoken word.
What about the charge of assault on the victim? Wish there was an island we could send all these violent people and leave them there permanently. Helicopter drop supplies and let them take care of themselves. Have patrols around the island to make sure they can’t escape.
DH it’s called the Everglades.
We have an island that needs a new industry: Puerto Rico. Write your congressman and senators.
That island was called Australia, not all that long ago. I guess the leftist revision of history has forgotten, like so much other history lessons.
Don’t let this scumbag out of jail for many, many years. He’s a total loser who’s going to seriously hurt soneine
That’s the Duckpond Publix, karma is sweeping across Dem cities everywhere today. Don’t be surprised if that store closes soon.
Judhe Green calculates 5 felony convictions = $45,000 bail. What a moron.
Get Walter Green off the bench, Gov. DeSantis. He is an actual danger to Alachua county citizens.
The cops shoulda tazed him when he was resisting arrest..
Release him OR. With only 5 felonies, he’s damn near a model citizen according to the Democrats.
I guess police probably don’t even carry batons/nightsticks nowadays. Getting smacked across the face with a wooden stick would have been a good first step in his rehabilitation (after punching a cop in the head and attacking a Publix customer). It must all be a big joke to him.
Such a POS.. another protected thug by the democrats
