Gainesville man arrested for sexual abuse of juvenile over a decade ago

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Sammie Oates IV, 29, has been charged with two counts of sexual abuse of a juvenile for incidents that allegedly occurred between 2011 and 2014.

At the time of the alleged incidents, Oates was between 15 and 18 years old, and the victim was in elementary school; the victim said the abuse occurred when Oates was at her house. She said Oates would tell her she was being punished for doing something bad and then sexually batter her; she reportedly described two distinct rape incidents.

The victim also said Oates would sit on the couch and “play with himself”; he also allegedly sexually battered her “a bunch” during these incidents, and the victim estimated that this happened over 40 times during the three-year period.

A warrant for Oates’s arrest was issued in January 2024, and in February 2024, the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office offered a reward for his arrest. In February 2025, a Gainesville Police Department officer conducted a traffic stop on his car, but he reportedly gave the officer his brother’s name, resulting in a sworn complaint being filed against his brother, which was not discovered until his brother applied for a job and learned of the charge as part of a background check.

Oates was arrested on June 24 on the two sexual battery charges and also charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and fraudulent use of another person’s identity. He has no criminal history, and on July 3, Judge Kristine Van Vorst granted a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • That’s a tough one. I am all for victim’s rights, but, when the perpetrator was allegedly also a juvenile when this happened, over 10 years ago, what tangible evidence is there? What is to stop anyone from alleging this against anyone else? This sort of ranks up there with the allegation that Kavanaugh groped a girl at a house party in high school….
