Gainesville man arrested for sexual battery on 13-year-old

James Christopher Cieply, 26, was arrested yesterday and charged with sexual battery on a girl who was 13 years old at the time.

The incident happened on June 5, 2021, at Cieply’s home, where the victim was staying. The victim, who now lives in another state, reported that on her last day in Florida, she was sleeping at Cieply’s home and woke up with his hand on her waist. He then allegedly groped her and digitally penetrated her vagina. At the time, she said she remained quiet “out of fear of potential violence.”

The victim exchanged text messages with Cieply later that day. The messages were allegedly “sexually overtoned” and “broadly discussed the sexual violation.” Cieply allegedly apologized in the messages for “overstepping bounds” and “not obtaining consent.”

After the victim moved out of state, Cieply visited her. She reported that he performed oral sex on her, digitally penetrated her vagina, and then “tried to have sex” with her. Cieply has been charged in that state with Sexual Intercourse Without Consent.

Post Miranda, Cieply told Gainesville Police Department detectives that the text messages were just a “miscommunication” and denied any sexual contact. He is being held on $100,000 bond.
