Gainesville man arrested for shooting airsoft pistol at homeless man at Millhopper Plaza
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Scott Warren Hanna, 59, was arrested yesterday after allegedly shooting an airsoft-style pistol at a homeless man at Millhopper Plaza and intentionally backing his vehicle toward the man.
At about 8:25 p.m. on May 27, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to the area outside the Gainesville Smoke and Cigar Shop at Millhopper Plaza (4211 NW 16th Boulevard), where the victim said a man had verbally attacked him because he is homeless. As the argument progressed, the man walked to his truck and took out a pistol, yelled at the victim, pointed the pistol, and fired approximately eight shots at the victim. None of the projectiles hit the victim.
The victim said the man then walked back to his truck and prepared to drive away; when the victim tried to take a picture of the tag on the truck, the man backed up rapidly toward the victim, and the victim had to quickly jump out of the way to avoid being hit. The man then left the scene in his truck.
A witness told the officer that she saw the altercation and took a video with her phone; she said she saw the man shoot at the victim after yelling at him, and she ran inside a business, yelling, “He’s shooting!” She said it looked like the man had a real gun.
A second witness also said she saw a man shooting at the victim and saw the same man intentionally back up rapidly and almost hit the victim. She described the vehicle as a silver pickup truck with a “Mossy Oak” window graphic on the back window.
The officer reviewed surveillance video from Gainesville Smoke and Cigar Shop and reported that the man’s face could be seen clearly on the video, and the witness’s video showed the same man standing in front of that business, yelling at the victim and holding a gun. The surveillance video shows the man firing the gun multiple times before getting into a silver pickup truck that looks like a GMC Canyon. The victim said he is familiar with the man, who often patronizes the businesses in the plaza.
The officer searched law enforcement databases for vehicles matching the description and found a silver GMC Canyon with an address about a mile away from the plaza. The officer went to the address and found the truck, which had a “Real Tree” graphic on the back window (similar to the “Mossy Oak” graphic). The officer reported that the registered owner of the truck was the same man in the videos of the incident and that a black semi-automatic pistol was in plain view between the driver’s seat and the center console.
The officer spoke with Hanna, and post Miranda, Hanna reportedly said he was “maybe” at the plaza and “maybe” got into an argument with a “homeless mother******.” He said the gun is not a real gun and does not shoot real bullets.
The officer reported that the pistol was a gas-powered pistol that shoots 50 Cal metal balls capable of causing serious bodily injury.
Hanna has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has no criminal convictions; Judge Meshon Rawls ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s office to hold him without bail until trial.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Not condoning what another stupid white guy did, but as blind as justice is, Judge Rawls sure knows the difference between black and white.
Hanna would have crapped his pants if the homeless guy was legally able to carry and exercise his right to ‘stand his ground.’
Interesting comment, we’re constantly gaslighted that people don’t see color, but here we are. SMH
That’s an interesting comment.
We’re constantly told by local leaders Gainesville is a smart, caring community but look around town. Leaders are making 4 traffic lanes, (that accommodate all traffic, into 2 for vehicular traffic and 2 for bicycles ), out of synch traffic signals everywhere, crossing devices where they are rarely used, rainbow sidewalks, red light cameras, increasing homelessness, special assessments on property owners, increased utility rates, (prior to GRU Authority), local government’s inability to live within their budget, not to mention the so-called “caring” activists aren’t taking anybody home or picking up the trash…etc.
Whoever thought Gainesville was smart and caring obviously hasn’t been here long. Been shaking my head for years about that.
What are you talking about? This has nothing to do with this article or my comment. LOL
I thought your comment was interesting and thought some might find mine to be as well.
The guy, (victim), was homeless. Some people get gaslit when the homeless population is mentioned. There’s got to be some correlation between the growing homeless population and our elected leaders. They control the taxes, and until recently, the utility. Those have impacts on housing affordability. Wouldn’t you agree?
Homeless? With a cell phone? Not condoning this man’s actions, but where can I find a cell phone like that?
Are you saying a homeless person can’t own a cell phone? Maybe I’m missing something because I’m reading about someone shooting at, and trying to back over a person and you’re concerned about a cell phone an homeless person has and where you can find one?
Obama and Mayor Poe gave them out to certain people a few years back, before their divisive actions had progressed to what they are now
They should have been giving out free visits to drug and mental health counselors.
Almost everyone has a cell phone nowadays. I used to work for the government and sign people up for free cell phones. Heck I know homeless that have 4-5 cell phones 🤦♀️
You can snag a pay as you go phone from Walmart and elsewhere for next to nothing, and buy batches of minutes for like $10 a pop.
Corporate America may not care to solve homelessness, but it’s happy to keep homeless people connected.
Better yet, you don’t even need to buy minutes. You can get a used smartphone and just use it on WiFi using WiFi calling. Some people really have no idea how the world works.
“Bubut he has a phone, why can’t he have an apartment with $1000 a month rent and $150 utilities?!?!?! You can’t be homeless with a phone!!!”
If it were that simple there would be no homeless people. I find it sad how stupid people are.
You sick individual, let me guess you will be next to go after a homeless man. Your statement is so demeaning, saying because someone can’t afford a 1000 dollar rent a month and 300 utility a month shouldn’t be aloud to have a simple cheap phone to stay in touch with the world. Drop the hate for people who have less than you because one day you will be the one with less.
You can get a working smartphone for $100 used. $100 isn’t going to get you housed but it will get you a phone which helps you access the internet on wifi to get resources. Are you really so stupid to think that someone who has a phone could get housed instead of having a phone? Do you live under a rock?
“Because he’s the hero Gainesville deserves, but not the one it needs right now.” Unnamed Gainesville detective, maybe.
So which was it, an “airsoft gun” Or a gun that had a “50 cal metal ball”? Which would be a desert eagle which is a real gun.
Sounds like a pellet gun. They can be deadly.
May be something like this?

Missed…how many times?
Lots of homeless dudes hang out there and are friendly, they don’t ask for anything, greet politely, aren’t stinky or wired, just hangin’ out. The management doesn’t ask them to leave unless they are harassing folks or stinky or high etc. As it is, lots of the clerks work alone so having a warm body outside ain’t so bad an idea.
Bubba shooter is very fortunate he didn’t get shot by someone and I think the judge is spot on recognizing this level of aggression is dangerous and he shouldn’t be on the street.
Thanks for the info. I was completely unaware this even existed. Yes, He is VERY LUCKY that a law abiding concealed carrier didn’t walk up on this incident or Mr. Hanna may have had a different ride downtown. Too many people using guns in the wrong manner. There should be some PSA on tv etc reminding people of the laws, they seem do it for everything else, but again the keywords are “responsible gun owner”.
“Judge Meshon Rawls ordered him held without bail” …wow, I see people getting re-arrested on here while on bail for far worse thing doing far worse things.
Mr. Rawls is an activist, not an honest judge, IMO.
AirSoft guns shoot 6mm (1/4″) plastic BB’s. Not capable of “serious injury”. Could hurt if shot in eye, but so can a pencil. 50 caliber is a big machine-gun load (1/2″ diameter). Even 000 buckshot is only 36 caliber (about 3/8″).
People are getting tired of all the beggars on the street corners. Enforce the panhandling ordinance that is already on the books for the City of Gainesville .
That is irrelevant. You can be irritates as hell when approached for money. You can’t pull out a weapon, fire, then attempt to back your truck into the person.
Is it really that hard to say “People should not fire weapons and drive their car into people that irritate them..”
ahahaha look at how soft he is in jail, not so tough when you’re not harrassing defenseless people huh
How are they defenseless?? Are they quadriplegic?
Great police work too.
Bet this gravy seal is a freeloading loser. They all are. Its why he’s so mad. All for me, none for you is thier creed.
I do not condone the man’s poor choices, but it’s clear that he snapped for some reason. Perhaps he is frustrated by the constant panhandling from homeless individuals he encounters everywhere in Gainesville.
The decision to deny bail is absurd and unjust, especially considering that the gun in question is a toy that shoots soft pellets. The man’s attempt to drive away to avoid having his license plate recorded and to intimidate the homeless man appears to be a panic response.
Let this situation play out in court, but let’s apply some common sense here; it is not as it is being portrayed.
someone else should stood their ground and given him life with no bail. Stop defending criminals
Calling it a toy is downplaying it, when air soft guns do cause injury. Toy guns do not cause injury
Ask the employees at the Millhopper Publix how much merchandise they steal each week.
