Gainesville man arrested for swinging machete at another man

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Sherman Simmons, 60, was arrested early yesterday morning and charged with aggravated assault after allegedly swinging a machete at another man.
The responding Gainesville Police Department officer reported that at about 12:32 a.m. on July 18, the victim was “looking for the rest of his weed” on the front porch of Simmons’s home in the 800 block of SE 9th Street when Simmons came out of the house and said he “was about to kill someone.”
The victim told the officer that Simmons chased him in the front yard with the machete and swung at him but missed him because he dodged the blow. The victim said he found a swingblade knife on the ground in the front yard and picked it up for protection, and when Simmons swung the machete again and missed, he hit Simmons in the hand, knocking the machete out of his hand.
Post Miranda, Simmons reportedly did not want to make any statements.
Simmons has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has two felony convictions (non-violent) and 12 misdemeanor convictions (non-violent). Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $75,000.
