Gainesville man charged with breaking into and damaging ex-girlfriend’s residence

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Bacarius A’kenshay Dinkins, 33, was arrested yesterday on a warrant for allegedly breaking into an ex-girlfriend’s residence in April, causing an estimated $1,000 of damage inside the residence, and stealing her medical marijuana.

A Gainesville Police Department officer reported that at about 1:00 p.m. on April 19, the victim was told by co-workers that Dinkins had called her workplace to check whether she was working; the victim called Dinkins and asked why he had called, and Dinkins reportedly told the victim he had kicked in the door of her residence, entered, and damaged items such as ceiling fans, lights, a wall, and the front door frame. He also reportedly admitted to stealing her property.

The officer responded to the residence and reported that there was damage throughout the home, estimated at about $1,000.

The victim also told the officer that her medical marijuana, valued at $40, was missing,

The victim said Dinkins had previously lived at the residence, but he was trespassed from the residence after they broke up.

The officer spoke with Dinkins by phone, and Dinkins reportedly admitted going to the victim’s home that morning, but he said he did not go inside. He said he knew he was trespassed from the victim’s residence and that he should not have been there; he also reportedly admitted that he had called the victim while at her residence.

Dinkins has been charged with burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, grand theft from a dwelling, and misdemeanor property damage. He has no criminal history, and Judge Joy Danne ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.
