Gainesville police chief to be sworn in during Nov. 21 City Commission meeting
Press release from City of Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gainesville Police Chief Nelson Moya will be officially sworn in during the upcoming Gainesville City Commission meeting. Bishop Christopher Stokes of The New Beginning Christian Worship Center, Inc. will administer the oath of office at the start of the meeting’s evening session.
When: 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21
Where: City Hall Auditorium, 200 E. University Ave.
Chief Moya’s career in law enforcement spans more than 30 years. He was hired as assistant police chief for the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) in June 2023 and began serving as interim chief of police in March before being selected as police chief in September after a nationwide search.
Since arriving at GPD, Moya has guided law enforcement strategies aimed at making Gainesville a safer community for all neighbors. These include:
- A Gun Violence Prevention Initiative that relies on data collection and analysis to enhance enforcement and intervention efforts
- Violent crime prevention and intervention efforts through firearm seizures, gun buybacks, and community outreach
- Recruitment efforts with the goal of bringing new officers into the agency
Gainesville City Commission meetings are broadcast on Community 12TV on Cox Cable Channel 12, livestreamed on the city’s website and Facebook page, and archived online. The commission meetings also are streamed on GNV TV through Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices.
Are you kidding me? “A Gun Violence Prevention Initiative that relies on data collection and analysis to enhance enforcement”
How will this stop one incident like this:

Why do Democrat run jurisdictions refuse to understand that the laws must be enforced if they want to reduce crime especially violent crime? Career criminals must be kept from society. If people know there will be serious consequences for their criminal actions they will be less prone to commit those actions. Wrist slapping doesn’t work.
who?
Oh oops, a White top cop? In Gainesville? How did that happen?
The city’s DEI department is as incompetent as the rest of the departments?
Same ole lines Jones used to rattle off. Nothing ever changes there does it?
When is GPD going to finally admit that no number of “programs” or “initiatives” is going to stop “gun violence”? The only thing that stops bad guys with guns is good guys with guns. The community needs to start delivering high speed messages covered in copper and lead.
