Press release from City of Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The City of Gainesville’s Regional Transit System (RTS) is improving 100 City bus stops to make public transportation more comfortable and convenient for all neighbors. This extended project, which is budgeted at $1,990,569, is funded through grants from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

Providing a safe and convenient transportation system for all users is a priority outlined in the City’s comprehensive plan. Older bus stops that did not meet standards as outlined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) have been redesigned. The bus stops slated to receive upgrades are in various locations across the city. Improvements will depend on the needs identified at each location.

Construction will include:

  • Installation of sidewalks with compliant curb ramps
  • Retrofitting of existing curb ramps
  • Increased pad space for passengers in wheelchairs
  • Updated shelters with adequate seating and side and roof panels
  • Improved lighting

“This is an important step to improve our current transportation infrastructure. We want all RTS bus stops to be comfortable and easy to use,” said Transportation Director Jesus Gomez. “The funding for this project allows us to renovate 9% of the roughly 1,100 bus stops across the system.”

The project also moves the City closer to its goal of providing equitable transportation options throughout all four districts. For public transit, equity can mean making the system more user-friendly, more ADA accessible, and more readily available to riders who rely on bus service to reach healthcare, food, employment, and other community resources.

The Transportation Department continues to identify and prioritize needs across the Gainesville Urbanized Area. Along with public transit projects, this work also includes the planning and design of bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, Vision Zero projects to improve traffic safety, and efforts to reduce transportation barriers for all neighbors.

The RTS bus stop improvement project began on Sept. 13; the first stop receiving upgrades is located near Santa Fe College in the 3000 block of NW 83rd Street. Work on the entire list of 100 bus stops will continue over the next several months. Construction is expected to be completed by April 2025.

  • How about kicking the homeless people out of the bus stop on archer road by the Wawa/Shands? The city leaders need to step up and do the right thing

    • Yeah…these are some nice new bum stops with lighting that are comfortable and easy to use….why pitch a tent at Grace? I got my cardboard sign where I can panhandle by the corner and a nice place to drink my beer, do drugs, stink up & crap up even though they put a trash can, and call home! That bar across the bench is a nice divider where I can stack my crap

  • The equity is nice so I can charge my cell phone EZ. Can they add a shower at the one on Main Street & 16th? God bless. Anything will help…I’m a veteran.

  • I am very pleased that these improvements will be done. In addition I am happy to see that only 1% pay to ride. Dr Prizzia is totally on board with this and so am I. Let’s go Gainesville. Get that wood burner up and running and as Dr P says: “LETS EMPTY THE GAINEY HOTEL.

    • That’s $2,000,000 spent on bumshelters…

      what A waste of $…

Just put a bus stop sign & a garbage can is all we needed.

  • Bus stop was eliminated on NW 43 Street between NW 39th Ave and NW 53 Avenue. #40 was only seasonal so most of the time riders did not know when to depend on it to run . I am unable to drive and need this bus route reinstated to get to appointments and shopping for basics. Needs to be year round Monday- Friday please
