Gainesville woman killed in I-75 crash

Staff report from Florida Highway Patrol release

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 30-year-old Gainesville woman was killed this morning when her vehicle ran off the roadway on I-75 and hit a utility pole.

At about 8:30 a.m. on May 20, the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a single-vehicle crash near mile marker 387 on southbound I-75 (Newberry Road); investigators determined that the vehicle ran off the roadway onto the west shoulder and hit a utility pole.

The driver, who was also the only occupant of the vehicle, was transported to UF Health Shands, where she was pronounced deceased. She was wearing a seatbelt.

This is an active investigation being conducted by FHP’s Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit. FHP was assisted at the crash scene by the Gainesville Police Department, the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, and Alachua County Fire Rescue.

  • The accident in the other story was mile marker 378 and this one 387?
I-75 is becoming more like downtown Gainesville – without the guns.
Wonder if a cell phone was the cause? Or was it the driver using their cell phone? Inquiring minds want to know.

  • Too many fatal accidents involving drivers driving off the road crashing into trees and poles. I suspect distracted driving with cell phones are likely to be a common cause.
