Gainesville woman killed while riding scooter in Chiefland

CHIEFLAND, Fla. – A 41-year-old Gainesville woman was killed last night while riding a scooter in Chiefland.

According to a release from the Florida Highway Patrol, at about 10:20 p.m. last night, the woman was a passenger on a scooter driven by a 41-year-old Trenton man; the scooter was traveling in the right northbound lane on U.S. 19 about a mile north of NW 20th Avenue when a sedan driven by a 28-year-old Branford woman hit the scooter from the rear.

The Gainesville woman sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Trenton man suffered serious injuries and was transported to UF Health Shands for treatment. The Branford woman was uninjured. The Branford woman was wearing a seatbelt; the scooter riders were not wearing helmets.

This incident is still under investigation.
