Georgia man arrested on I-75 for 5th DUI, making false report, drugs, and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon

Robert Eugene Barrett, 57, of Rossville, GA, was arrested yesterday morning after his car swerved off I-75, hit a concrete culvert, and went airborne.

Florida Highway Patrol responded to the 382 mile marker on I-75 at about 11 a.m. on April 30 to a report of a crash. The officer found tire marks indicating that a vehicle had drifted off the roadway to the right, striking a concrete culvert. She wrote that no braking marks were observed. The vehicle was in the wood line, and she wrote that it was evident that the vehicle had hit multiple trees and gone airborne. Next to the vehicle was a man bleeding from the forehead and face, consistent with the broken windshield on the driver’s side of the vehicle. The man’s Georgia ID card identified him as Robert Barrett.

Barrett reportedly told the officer that he had been a passenger in the vehicle and that the driver had fled on foot. The officer noted that the vehicle was “loaded with a copious amount of personal items, making it improbable for there to be two people inside the vehicle.” A K-9 searched the area but was unable to establish a track, making it unlikely that there had been a second person involved.

Barrett also reportedly said all the items in the vehicle were his but said the vehicle was not his, he was not driving, and he was picked up by an unknown man at a weigh station; however, he could not provide the location of the weigh station.

Barrett reportedly claimed ownership of various items that he placed on the hood of the vehicle, including a magazine for a 9mm handgun. Multiple aerosol paint cans (paint, enamel, etc.) were found in and around the vehicle.

The officer noted that a records check of Barrett’s ID card found that his driver’s license is currently suspended because he has four prior DUI convictions, along with a refusal to submit to breath testing. The officer noted: “Mr. Barrett also has a lengthy criminal history involving giving false information to law enforcement, narcotics violations, and robbery with a firearm.”

Barrett was transported to UF Health Shands to be treated for his injuries, where they reportedly found a glass pipe, methamphetamine, marijuana, and rolling papers in his clothes. Post Miranda, Barrett reportedly denied ownership of all the items in his clothes and said he did not know how they got there.

Barrett has been charged with DUI (4th or subsequent offense), DUI with damage to property, making a false report, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, possession of drug equipment, and a third or subsequent offense of driving without a valid license. Barrett is being held on $350,000 bail.
