GFR responds to apartment fire caused by falling asleep while smoking
Staff report from Gainesville Fire Rescue release
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Early this morning, Gainesville Fire Rescue crews responded to an apartment fire and determined that the fire started after a resident fell asleep smoking; investigators also found that the smoke detectors had been disabled by the occupants.
At about 4 a.m. on August 28, multiple units from Gainesville Fire Rescue responded to a reported apartment fire in the area of 1100 NW 45th Ave. Upon arrival, units found a small smoldering fire in a back bedroom that had been mostly extinguished by the resident. Crews finished extinguishing the fire with a water extinguisher and removed the smoldering contents from the apartment.
The fire started after a resident fell asleep while smoking. Fortunately, the residents woke up and were able to get out with only minor smoke inhalation.
Unfortunately, there were no working smoke detectors in the residence because they had all been disabled by the occupants. Gainesville Fire Rescue would like to remind everyone that smoke detectors save lives. Please make sure you have working smoke detectors in your residence, and if you do smoke, please do so safely, outside of your residence.

Smoking in your house is so trashy. Hopefully they learned their lesson.
@BM101 — Smoking is trashy, period. This incident is exactly why I have said for YEARS that smoking needs to be banned in apartment complexes. Not to mention non-smokers have to breathe the nasty cigarette smoke.
An apartment I rented had a smoker in it before me and was so bad you could see the white squares on the wall where their pictures hung. The blinds were yellow and the whole place smelled awful.
