Staff report

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, Governor Ron DeSantis signed two bills, SB 2C (Immigration) and SB 4C (Immigration). The bills, enacted in a special session, became effective as soon as they were signed.

The bills make it a state crime to enter Florida as an illegal alien; require state and local law enforcement to assist the federal government in immigration enforcement; give the Governor authority to remove local officials who fail to cooperate with federal deportation or immigration enforcement efforts; create a presumption that illegal aliens will not be released on bail; eliminate in-state tuition for illegal immigrants; and enhance criminal penalties for transnational gangs and offenses committed by illegal clients, including registering to vote or voting as an illegal alien.

  • “Automatic death penalty for illegal aliens who commit murder.”

Is it really Constitutional for the state to kill people based on where their home address happens to be?

    • I don’t give a cr** about a murderers or rapist rights. I care more for the victims and LAW abiding LEGAL US CITIZENS

    • All for it.
If one takes in a criminal and gives assistance or shelter, they’re normally charged with accessory or harboring. The people who’ve entered this country illegally have violated the law. Can’t do it in any other country, why should it be allowed, and often encouraged, by the liberal lunatics.
The clown town leadership of Gainesville or any other controlling entity shouldn’t be exempt from arrest and prosecution.

  • This is a grandstanding waste of resources, as if our law enforcement didn’t have enough to do and should spend time rounding up gardeners and cleaning ladies. Immigrants – legal and illegal – have lower crime rates than native born Americans, crime rates are down, employment and wages up, and between taxes paid and services rendered, the cost to governments is break even at worst. We have a growing economy and a native born work force not growing fast enough to fill the jobs, so actual removal of the promised 13 million illegals will cost our economic growth with no benefit. In short, this is dumb.

Sure, seek out actual criminals to deport or prosecute – that was what Obama’s policy was – but if we were smart, we would devise a path to legalize those otherwise lawful and hard working undocumented, some of whom have been here for many years.

    • And you employ how many illegals? Chicken Little crying the sky is falling! There are plenty of Legal Immigrants who want to work and become productive US Citizens. Did FJB or Oblama help them? Nope!

Legal immigrants do the paperwork and assimilate! That is how our country was built.

      Criminals do not!

The legal immigrants are welcome! Those who cannot follow the current immigration laws need to go back where they came from!

      • Due to our flawed immigration procedures and lack of resources, the wait time for processing the “paperwork” for immigrants at the border – may of them desperate enough to hike a thousand miles with kids in hopes of becoming US citizens – is for ever and meanwhile, by law, those waiting are released into the country until their hearing. The immigration bill that Trump killed in the fall addressed this by streamlining the process and adding agents to speed up the process. The 2013 immigration bill – like the recent one had bipartisan support – had similar measures but was killed in the House (Senate passed it) under the Hastert Rule (majority of GOP support is necessary to bring a bill to the floor) where it would have also passed. The GOP has refused twice now to allow a vote on sensible reform because they like the crisis as a political weapon.

  • His usual grandstanding. He’s simply restating federal law. No doubt trying to suck up to President Musk since he’s termed out as governor this year.

    • 😂Unfortunately given the number of people who ignore/violate/disobey/disregard those laws they probably should be restated. You know; like felons aren’t supposed to possess firearms, don’t litter, don’t drink & drive, slower traffic keep right, yield to pedestrians, don’t jaywalk – those need restating too. I’ve got co-workers who are distraught about the possibility ICE may visit the workplace and remove those who have entered the United States illegally. Someone already mentioned you can’t go to other countries without proper documentation and authorization. In fact, if you overstay your VISA in some Eastern countries, they will arrest you.

By the way, I think DeSantis term ends in 2027.

  • What about the penalty for businesses who employ the undocumented worker? Do they still get a three times PASS before any enforcement is enacted? What a joke… if you punish the undocumented worker, come for the business owner hiring them.

    • Didn’t know this. 100 percent agree with you. If there isn’t a job, the criminal likely will go someplace else.
