Governor DeSantis takes further action to address illegal immigration and criminal activity in Florida

Press release from the Office of Governor Ron DeSantis
TALLAHASSEE, Fla – Today, Governor Ron DeSantis signed three bills to combat illegal immigration in Florida. These bills also continue Florida’s efforts to maintain law and order and take proactive measures against illegal aliens who engage in criminal activity.

“The federal government has failed in its responsibility to secure our southern border, leaving states to fend for themselves,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “In Florida, we do not tolerate illegal immigration, let alone lawlessness committed by illegal aliens who shouldn’t be here in the first place. The bills I signed today further enhance Florida’s capabilities to uphold the law.”
“Under the leadership of Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida has provided a blueprint for other states to protect their citizens against illegal immigration,” said Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez. “Our administration will not stand on the sidelines and watch as the Biden Border Crisis continues to spiral out of control. I’m proud to serve alongside Governor DeSantis as we take action to protect Floridians in every corner of our state.”
“Ever since President Biden was sworn in, his administration has taken systematic steps to dismantle our country’s public safety immigration laws,” said Attorney General Ashley Moody. “I am grateful that here in Florida, we have leaders who will step up to keep Floridians safe. Thanks to Governor DeSantis and our lawmakers, those here illegally committing crimes will face harsh penalties and we will continue to build a stronger, safer Florida.”
Governor Ron DeSantis signed the following bills into law:
- SB 1036, which enhances penalties for a crime committed by an individual who returns to the country illegally after an initial deportation.
- A third-degree felony (up to 5 years in prison) after deportation will be charged as a second-degree felony (up to 15 years in prison).
- A second-degree felony (up to 15 years in prison) after deportation will be charged as a first-degree felony (up to 30 years in prison).
- A first-degree felony (up to 30 years in prison) after deportation will be charged as a life felony.
- SB 1036 also enhances penalties for crimes committed in furtherance of drug cartels.
- HB 1451, which prevents counties and municipalities from accepting ID cards issued to illegal aliens by other jurisdictions.
- Florida already prohibits local jurisdictions from issuing IDs or driver licenses to illegal immigrants.
- HB 1589, which increases penalties on individuals who operate a vehicle without a license.
- Increases the maximum sentence from 60 days in jail to one year in jail for two or more offenses, and a minimum mandatory sentence of ten days in jail for three or more offenses.
Additionally, Governor DeSantis applauded the Legislature for passing Senate Memorial 1020, which urges the United States Secretary of State to designate the drug cartels that operate at our southern border as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.
Governor DeSantis also spoke to the proactive actions Florida is taking to defend against a potential influx of illegal aliens from Haiti. For more information about those actions, click here.

Everything in the press release seems reasonable and not overreaching imo.
My biggest gripe is that govt isn’t addressing the actual issue: employing illegal immigrants. Why won’t media or government speak of this real culprit? Do large corps truly have this much pull? (rhetorical statement)
Most of the millions of illegal immigrants are not living off of government handouts. They’re being employed by private businesses and paid with cash and also maybe living quarters. This is how the vast majority survive. The media and govt reps are redirecting our attention to issues that really aren’t the problem.
Sure, there are many other related issues that are not acceptable but the fact that fed govt is is allowing wide open borders to provide cheap manpower all while all state governments turn a blind eye to illegal employment practices is ridiculous. We don’t need more surveillance or databases (the end goal)…we need our govt to reign in the corps and industries that are known to abuse cheap labor
Great bills! We cannot let Senile Buffoon Biden destroy this state! Send him packing. As well as other failed liberal zealots from city leadership: current commission, Poe Boy and his Lick Boy Adrian Hayes (fakes being a minority). Makes those nuts move by carrying signs at City Hall – just a peaceful protest.
Illegals are indeed being employed by govt. To pad census counts, voting districts, and registering to vote in local or state elections PLUS the Nov. prez. count. Because by the time courts address it later, Biden will be “re-elected” like 2020 🤡👹. So they hope.
It’s time to deport everyone who is here illegally if you want to come to this country then do it legally. For you woke idiots who don’t like my post try walking in to Mexico illegally and see what happens you your woke A$$ you be arrested before you even think about it
This is what peak performance looks like when a Governor needs to take action when DC won’t. Thank you Gov. DeSantis and the Legislature.
What about our insurance problems?
You go Ron…..drop the hammer on them!
The best Governor that we have had in many years, if not the best ever.
The most effective thing DeSantis could do about the GOP Border Crisis is lobby our 2 senators and Florida GOP US House representatives to hurry up and pass the border bill written primarily by Sen Langford (R-Okl). That would mean he actually cared about the border as something more than a political prop, which under order from Trump, is the current GOP position.
Langford’s bill was endorsed by the Border Agents Union and the Wall Street Journal. It includes:
The border security bill will put a huge number of new enforcement tools in the hands of a future administration and push the current Administration to finally stop the illegal flow. The bill provides funding to build the wall, increase technology at the border (including fentanyl detection), and add more detention beds, more agents, and more deportation flights. The border security bill ends the abuse of parole on our southwest border that has waived in over a million people. It dramatically changes our ambiguous asylum laws by conducting fast screenings at a higher standard of evidence, limited appeals, and fast deportation.
“New bars to asylum eligibility will stop the criminal cartels from exploiting our currently weak immigration laws. The bill also has new emergency authorities to shut down the border when the border is overrun, new hiring authorities to quickly increase officers, and new hearing authorities to quickly apply consequences for illegal crossings. It changes our border from catch and release to detain and deport.
“Our immigration laws have been weak for years. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to close our open border and give future administrations the effective tools they need to stop the border chaos and protect our nation
That bill is a ridiculous spending bill that the country cannot afford.
We have the laws and resources in place now. Close the entry points and prosecute business that are abusing illegal immigrants for cheap, tax-free labor. Require any legit asylum seekers to follow the existing laws. This isn’t a complex issue to fix – it’s a political nightmare issue because neither party wants to cut out cheap immigrant labor, especially during an election year when their reelection may depend on corporate support
Both Trump and GOP legislators asked for new laws to help address the border crisis when he was in office. None have occurred in decades, the 2013 bi-partisan Senate bill which was not as conservative as this one, killed by Boner (sp?) in the House under the “Hastert Rule” (no bills advanced unless a GOP majority favored them).
We certainly can afford the bill.
PS Several of Trumps measures were stopped by courts and this bill addresses the law on them. It is pure propaganda that the bill is either bad or useless because Republicans can’t admit they insisted on it before a vote on Ukrainian and Israeli aid but came out against it – without having time to even read it – when Trump told them too so they can save it as an election issue. Well OK, but an informed electorate will see that for what it is, a desire to keep a screwed up situation screwed up for politics and the fact that almost all GOP “leaders” listen to Trump, not Americans. As noted, this was the best chance for a border bill and another chance won’t come by for s long time. Even if Trump wins and keeps the House he won’t be able to overcome a senate filibuster which no doubt Democrats will throw up unless the bill is much more liberal than this one.
This is it!
Legislation at the federal level isn’t reliable as long as Executive actions can sabotage it. And as long as Dems want more chaos and misery worldwide. FDR is their role model, don’t forget.

Key word being Florida officers. Thank you for caring about our nations borders (unlike DC uniparty) and thank you Gov DeSantis and the state Legislature for allowing folks to do their jobs.
Good start, but you also need to crack down on Citizen Repeat Offenders, gov. The goal is simple: 200% cop pay raises, 3 Strikes, Starve lawyers, judges, and other parasite orgs. Export convicts if prisons “overcrowded” to Blue stares and 3rd world prisons for a small fee.
