Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis call to protect patient freedom and permanently ban mRNA mandates in Florida

First Lady Casey DeSantis speaks in Tampa on March 5

Press release from the Office of Governor Ron DeSantis

TAMPA, Fla. – Today, Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis called on the CDC to stop recommending the COVID-19 vaccine for children. Additionally, Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis called on the Florida Legislature to make permanent the state prohibitions on mRNA mandates and to add vaccination status protections to the Patient’s Bill of Rights.

“Guided by common sense and sound science, Florida has led the way in protecting patients’ rights. Now is the time to secure these protections and do even more to defend medical freedom,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Let’s keep Florida the beacon of freedom in health care, where the rights of all patients are enshrined permanently in law.”

“Today, Governor DeSantis, Surgeon General Ladapo, and I called on the Florida Legislature to make permanent the prohibitions against the COVID mRNA vaccine mandate,” said First Lady Casey DeSantis. “Florida stood in the breach to protect people during COVID, now it’s time to make sure these protections last.”

“I am deeply grateful to Governor Ron and First Lady Casey DeSantis for continuing to put the needs and rights of Floridians first,” said State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo. “These proposals will strengthen the sovereignty of patients, and we look forward to advancing these issues with our federal partners at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.”

Calling on the Federal Government to End Recommendations of the COVID Vaccine for Children

In March of 2022, Florida was the first state in the nation to issue guidance stating that healthy children from ages 5 to 17 may not benefit from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Results from studies raise concerns that mRNA vaccines are associated with more harm than initially estimated at the time of the emergency authorization.

In 2021, the FDA authorized and the CDC began recommending the COVID mRNA vaccine for children, without sufficient evidence or data that it provided health benefits. In fact, in clinical trials, children and adolescents who received the COVID shots experienced higher rates of adverse effects, including lower respiratory tract infections. Experimental mRNA shots should not be recommended to children.

Calling on the Florida Legislature to Permanently Ban mRNA Mandates

On June 1, 2025, current law sunsets several provisions that provide protections against mRNA vaccine mandates.

If this goes into effect, schools and higher education would be able to mandate students get mRNA vaccines.

Additionally, government entities and businesses could mandate employees get mRNA vaccines or be fired.

Calling on the Florida Legislature to Add Vaccination Status Protections to the Patient’s Bill of Rights

Floridians should not be kicked out of their doctor’s office or denied treatment for choosing to not get a vaccine.

Proposed language would update Florida Statutes to prohibit healthcare providers and facilities from discriminating against a patient based on their vaccination status.

  • This site’s fandom for all things DeSantis has no bounds.

There is a label for reprinting verbatim press releases – even if you use a dark pattern of italic disclaimers – it’s called propaganda.

You’ll never allow this comment, but we all see what is going on here.

    • This is one of 11 press releases we published today, including one from the City of Gainesville. We publish press releases from a multitude of sources and trust our readers to decide whether the source is trustworthy. We no longer live in a world where media outlets have newsrooms full of reporters with nothing better to do than rewrite information from press releases.

      • Thank you for providing our community such professional journalism for over 5 years now. You do a fantastic job, Jennifer Cabrera. Know how you do it since there are only 24 hours in a day and you are one hard working woman! We are so fortunate that this is your passion.

      • JC – you trust your readers?? A good percentage obvious believes everything you publish – and with that you have to assume some responsibility.

        • There’s a great number who will believe anything. Look how many people believed the BioFiasco was going to be beneficial and equitable distribution of monies was going to solve economic disparities.

        • Your leftist newspaper (The Gainesville Sun) has failed, just as most things leftist eventually fail. You have to take what you can get. If you wish to note any errata or make corrections, this is the perfect place for YOU to do it, right?

          • All newspapers across America are failing if they even still exist, and it has nothing to do with left wing/right wing but the internet. Fortunately some on-line local news sources like the AC have come in to partly fill that vacuum, but to date their coverage and circulation is nothing like the old local papers. As good as Jennifer is reporting local events she’s one person with seemingly no staff. It remains to be seen if efforts like hers can grow to be anything like our old papers (I believe the Sun has 1 person in Alachua County with a hook up to USA Today for everything else.)

Those of us serious about regional, national, and international news go to the remaining few top notch and available US papers like the NYTs, WaPo, WSJ, and even the LATs. Those more interested in opinion than news can go national sources of various flavors and they don’t seem to to be suffering.

          • You missed The Washington Post, LA Times, and other papers being mentioned in the news recently for shifting their editorial boards’ opinions away from the left and ‘wokeness’? That was a fairly major story.

The writing is on the wall. RIP Democrat Party. The zeitgeist of the country has shifted significantly. Rachel Maddow has been replaced by Joe Rogan. Humor has returned. Woke is dead, for all practical purposes. VERY few younger people are ‘so scared of the bad orange man’ like the aging TDS cat ladies are. They are interested in success and having real lives. Anybody with a whit of sense is glad the open border has been closed. NOBODY at UF wants to stay here after graduating, with the way things are now.

Don’t be surprised to see people elected here who want to shutter GRACE, enforce the law, and restore the downtown and startup culture. The funny thing is, you probably support all those things, and I’m guessing you support ending wars instead of prolonging them, as the pink blazer brigade wants to do. So you don’t really make sense.

          • Peabody! Look at me!

The changes at the WaPo and LATs were not to sell newspapers to MAGA readers (like their leader, they don’t like to read) but to keep from getting sued, investigated, or otherwise harassed by Trump and pretend they’re his buddy. They went to Mar-A-Lago and gave him money!

The clear point here is you don’t know what the hell you are talking about because you don’t read credible news sources. What I just told you is not some inside secret but so obvious your grandkids could figure it out.

On future elections, I’ll bet money on the House changing at the midterms. Trump is already under water in the polling – despite the one of many lies he told about that Tuesday – a new 1st this early in his presidency, won by 1.5% and did not win a majority of Americans’ votes, and won by the smallest margin since 2000 and 2nd smallest since 1968. Democrats still support more popular issues than Republicans. And that’s not even mentioning the reaction to the damage Trump has planned for the economy and government services (80k VA jobs eliminated for instance).

Good luck, but wake the f up and read a newspaper not owned by Rupert Murdock.

          • I think it’s more likely the newspapers felt bullied by the woke mob. Now that they see the mob has been rejected by the public, they are free to do as they please. It’s hard to believe someone like Bezos, a Cuban from Miami who works his employees to the bone for minimal pay and tries to stamp out any efforts at unionization, is a bleeding-heart leftist.

          • You can think whatever you want, but I just told you why it’s BS and any perusing of the news as well as common sense will confirm that. You’re on your own and your being snowed.

          • Thank you, Jazzman, Olivia & Jane Ire for Speaking Truth to Power.

Sadly, this site seems to be overpopulated by maggats that drank the deluded koolaid & believe in fascism.

I can not waste my time anymore with people that are unconscious fascists.

Good Luck, Jazzman on waking the maggats up.

I do know this to be true the Light will prevail over the darkness.

And, Chump will fall as all Fake, Fascist Dictators do.

And, for all of you here that believe Chump is ordained.

            NOT.

            In the meantime Folks.

Some, of the posts here are just too aggresive and I will not waste my time anymore.

Blessings to you Jazzman, Olivia & Jane Ire.

          • You guys are dinosaurs now. Go crawl off to your dinosaur graveyard and DEI.

          • See above Peabody. You’ve been de-pants and given a red belly in public.

          • That’s precious that you think robber baron Bezos has his heart in the right place, but he just doesn’t have the cojones to stand up to the bad orange man. I bet you think the 500 lb. perennial local DNC Chair and Sara Rockwell are pictures of health, right?

          • DJ, I have little hope of persuading anyone who voted for Trump TWICE! I do have hopes of giving them doubts when confronted with hard facts, instead of the 24/7 lies their leader blankets them with and echo chamber right wing screamers repeat.

More realistically, I assume there are independents or even real conservative Republicans who can’t stomach the orange man and who will listen for another opinion – hopefully with some facts – expressed on this otherwise overwhelming swamp of ignorant and nasty opinions.

          • And I’m the dummy?

I’ll give you the 1st time because we didn’t know he was a Russian asset then.

      • That’s not what good newsrooms do and you know it and practice it with your reporting. Enough of the cynicism about news media please. What is left is all that is between us and the complete ignorance at the ballot box which we are quickly approaching.

        • I’m not being cynical. It’s not “best practice” to publish press releases verbatim; it’s better to vet the claims, provide context, and highlight opposing views.

Since I don’t have any employees (excluding very-part-time freelancers), I decided to publish press releases verbatim while clearly labeling them. The reader must then take the source into account when evaluating the information.

Maybe I’m unusual, but I’m always interested in what politicians and governments say about themselves. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I (privately) mock them; I’m sure others have opposite reactions from mine. But I still find the press releases interesting, and they often include information useful to residents after you sift through the self-congratulatory language.

          • If your reply is aimed at least partly at me, I have no problem with press releases as long as properly identified as such, which you do, and you are also seemingly fair about publishing them from a wide variety of sources.

My problem is with your comment

“… media outlets have newsrooms full of reporters with nothing better to do than rewrite information from press releases.”

which is insulting to “media” (whoever you happen to mean by that) which I am certain in general try as hard as you do to do good reporting, and some of them risk and lose their lives doing so. You are feeding the nonsensical and unwarranted attack on what is left of news reporters and outlets, an unfortunate result given that journalism now is at least as good and fair as it has ever been. The result of this cynicism is the attitude – common here in the comments – that you should just read news from sources you like and everyone else is lying. If not the main reason for how we ended up with this lying felon in our face for another 4 years, it is contributory.

          • “Nothing better to do” simply means that somebody decides on the highest-priority work for each employee of a media outlet. If someone is rewriting press releases, somebody decided that was the best use of that reporter’s time. That can certainly be the case in any newsroom when you have student/intern reporters or if it’s a slow news day. It’s not an insult at all. (My observation is that many of these press releases are simply not covered because there is a policy to fold them into articles as opposed to simply publishing them. I have made a different decision, which people are free to agree with or not.)

          • Whatever Jennifer, but “newsrooms” are not full of any kind of employees these days and there are regrettably not that many “newsrooms” left. Haven’t you heard? You can get your news free from your friend’s uncle on Facebook …. or the Russians.

            Never sure which.

          • “As good and fair as it ever has been.”

😭🤥🤣🤥😭 That wins for the most ridiculous comment I’ve read in weeks.

          • More Baloney. 97% of news outlets are left wing. Get real.

          • Not being racist, anti-science, and right wing is not the same thing as left wing.

Remember, news and opinion can be separate and our best news sources (WSJ, NYTs, and WaPo) exhibit this quality

          • It’s not journalism.

It’s a newswire or public relations, but it’s not journalism.

If you continue to do it, you should mark them clearer. I’d be more interested to know if you are taking payment to run press releases or if you will cut and paste anything anyone sends? Or are you applying some mixture? For example, you’ll run anything from the DeSantis administration for free, but require Krystal to pay a small fee, but you will refuse to run something from the Trump administration???

The lack of clear standards mixed with a profit motive mixed with a clear ideological slant erode credibility and trust.

          • What are your editorial rules for deciding to publish or not publish a press release?

          • In general, if the press release is from a local entity and about a local/state issue/event or from a governmental entity or a politician representing Alachua County residents, I’ll publish it.

        • Many are well past complete ignorance when it comes to casting ballots. Thanks for having some remaining confidence though; there’s a glimmer of hope.

    • Guess you were wrong.

Wonder what else you’ve been wrong about.

      • The 👎🏻 is indicative of the reading comprehension levels for many on this medium. Olivia stated, “You’ll never allow this comment, but we all see what is going on here.”

Looks like many of you are equally wrong. Now make an equitable distribution of that.

    • Olivia – and we thought we’d be rid of DeSantis when Pudding Fingers’ final term ran out but now we have Casey throwing her white gloves into the ring.

    • The only idiocy happening is your and Olivia Clark’s comment. The adverse effects are documented and people have the right to decide the risk/benefit for themselves and their children.

  • No vaccine passports in order to conduct commerce in Florida!

Trump needs to do the same for the United States!

The WHO and devil Schwab from the WEF can go to hell!

    My body my choice!

    • You and your fellow MAGA Republicans are free to not get vaccinated, free to catch as many diseases as possible, and win as many Darwin Awards as possible. Please do so as soon as possible. Florida will be such a nicer place for the rest of us after you win your Darwin Award.

      • If we all die who’s going to be the recipient of your anger?
You may have a COEXIST bumper sticker on your Prius but your actions speak far louder. Eventually the people you’ve chosen to keep bound will rise up and realize you’ve been lying to them.

        • You Voted: Thank you so very very much with your touching concern regarding my ability to have a suitable object of anger.

As long as there are Russians, North Koreans, and of course the most evil, vile, sick, horrible people ever created on Earth, Cuban Communists, I shall never run out of people to get angry at.

So with a clear conscience please feel free to contract measles and remove yourself and all fellow unvaccinated freedom loving MAGAs from my country. I will be happy left behind. Very, very happy.

          • Comment: keep taking those experimental MRNA clot shots from trump’s operation warp speed…You’re a control freak fascist if you want control of my body….sorry, it’s my body, my choice. Too bad, so sad…the devil will not win.

          • Comment – AND WHO EXACTLY IS THE RACIST?

Don’t worry your little head, I have zero concern for you, just pointing out your obvious hypocrisy. Thanks for the confirmation.

        • Stereotyping contest:

What kind of car does “You voted” drive?

          1. Camouflaged Hummer with gold hubcaps

          2. ’99 Ford Escort with no hubcaps

          • Which one?
The Jeep, Lexus or Toyota? Depends on how I feel. And before you think it, you’re damn right I buy Japanese branded vehicles, along with all sorts of other Japanese products. They’re more often than not better quality and more reliable. I sincerely doubt there’s many commenters here watching a Curtis Mathis TV.

With the above average wages you pay your employees, what kind of vehicles do they drive?

You may as well put your hypocrisy out there too.

  • Maybe Casey can run for Coroner and not Govenor.

Lapado is a quack & a fraud – not up for debate.

    • Didn’t know she’s running yet for Governor. Has there been a press release?
Although she’s more likely to make a far better candidate than, ‘still searching for my clothes Gillum.’

      Lapado is a wackadoo though.

    • As long as your “leaders”‘ look like 500 lb. Jay Maggio and 275 lb. Sara Rockwell, you probably shouldn’t be speaking authoritatively about any matters of health. Many of you look like you need pig-specialist DVMs instead of MDs.

  • Idiots. This is the guy who gave us Ladapo and tried to ride medical ignorance to the White House and is responsible for thousands of deaths in Florida.

“Personal freedom” snowflakes like him can’t tell the difference between 1/3 of Europe dying while experiencing it in 1250 and our good fortune to be alive when vaccines from polio to measles to covid have saved millions of lives while helping immunize our population from more plagues. That’s not “personal freedom” that’s murderous license with complete disregard for others, unless you’re either too dumb to fish or on a death trip with the family along.

  • What’s common sense about trying to silence the CDC against giving vaccine recommendations when themradels virus has spread across 5 states including FL and caused the death of 2 child in Texas, half of those being hospitalized are unvaccinated. Talking about medical freedom. What kind of medica freedom exists in a state where a woman has no control over her reproductive organs having to travel out of state for evenigrdsving TX in problem pregnancies???

  • Please, I beseech you too not promote Conspiracy theories.

Meatball is NOT a Doctor or Scientist.

Ledapo, sadly is bought out and has no business as Surgeon General.

Politics do NOT need to be playing out in the Medical Field.

Vaccines work & SAVE LIVES !

Medical Studies have proven that Vaccines work !

    Thank you.

  • I would suggest that the labeling of a press release should be at the beginning of the title, not under a photograph. And, this particular press release is misleading in its report on the science of mRNA vaccines and a disservice to your readers and the community’s health. I financially support your paper and hope that you will better serve “truth” by labeling up front. Thank you!

      • As Popejoy notes, maybe you should make the “this is a press release, not journalism” note more prominent.

        • Prominent. That would work for lots of things: Rapist; Molester; Thief; Drunk; Addict; …
          Worked for Lt. Aldo Raine.

Jennifer’s doing a fantastic job. Has been for years.
It doesn’t matter how prominent she makes something, people are only going to read what they want to see.

      • Jennifer, you might consider a disclaimer when publishing press releases from non-doctors advocating medical positions for which they not only have no qualifications, but have been reprimanded officially by medical organizations and even UF docs in the past for bad advice counter to the CDC, and when studies have shown they are responsible for the deaths of thousands of Floridians. You are disseminating dangerous quackery.

          • And a quack Jennifer, who besides being in opposition to the medical consensus behind the covid vaccine which has saved millions of lives, while associating with veritable witch doctors on the Barrington Paper, he has been denounced by his fellow UF medical faculty members – as if he ever shows up to earn his salary – for purposefully falsifying data in a report he published about Covid vaccines. Their report laid down the specifics and the ruse.

But hey, your publication, your reputation, your conscience, and hopefully no law suits from grieving families.

          • PS You can report on this press release, but publishing it without comment – or any PR I would think – without a disclaimer could mean you are promoting the views it contains. Maybe not as you must have considered this before given all the press releases you do publish.

I know it is not your intent to promote every PR you publish, or for that matter, any of them.

          • Maybe Rachel Maddow and Joy Reid can come over to your house and tell you what you should believe, Jazzman. How do you know Jennifer doesn’t agree with the press release 100%? Since she probably does, your whole barrage of comments is ridiculous. Anyone with any sense sure wouldn’t be recommending Covid shots at this point unless they want to be responsible for others having heart and/or neurological problems and possibly dying.

          • Dude, a non-expert can “agree” with an expert or in this case a proven dishonest quack, but who cares? Also in this case, that category includes Jennifer, the Governor, and his old lady.

          • You are the quack. He is a board certified MD with a PhD, hired by UF after being vetted. Not to mention he’s the SURGEON GENERAL! That’s too bad if some stern old womyn friends of Kayser Enneking in the medical field don’t like him, or whoever it is.

          • He was not vetted and he has been reprimanded by his UF “colleagues” – he’s never there – for falsifying data in a “study” he did on Covid.

You don’t know anything, do you?

    • Hey left wing Jane. Guess who brought in the Measles?? Your beloved illegals. Take care now

  • These retards here are on alachua chronicle all the time and are now going after the person who runs alachua chronicle…….. because they are mad about the news. It’s quite sad actually. Its like getting a free sandwhich but then getting angry because it has mustard on it. Alachua Chronicle has been an excellent news source to north central florida. All of you karens should just relax because nobody cares about you.

  • Thank you, for giving us a choice in using abortion research tissue demonic faux “vaccines” in the future, or not. The side effects are noticed worldwide, not just here.
    🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

  • Problem is not vaccines, Problem is poorly trained md’s
Who don’t care about patients only money. Some of plainly incompetent.
