Governor Ron DeSantis announces Florida opts in to Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit supporting school choice

Press release from the Office of Governor Ron DeSantis

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced Florida will be opting in to the Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit established through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act to expand school choice efforts.

“Florida families have access to the nation’s top-ranked and largest school choice program. About 1.4 million students are enrolled in school choice options in Florida — more than most other states’ entire K-12 school population,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “The new federal school choice program will allow Florida families to supplement their existing scholarships.”

The newly enacted Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit is an opportunity to further support education freedom. Starting January 1, 2027, Floridia taxpayers will have the opportunity to receive a tax credit of up to $1,700 per year for contributing to the program, which assists K-12 students with educational expenses. By opting in to this program, Florida is once again empowering its residents and families to make the choices that are best for them.

Florida leads the nation in education freedom. In 2023, Florida enacted universal school choice to give every family access to school choice options that meet their needs. Nearly half of all students in Florida are now learning in a school choice setting — private, charter, virtual, or homeschool.

The Heritage Foundation ranked Florida #1 in Education Freedom for the fourth year in a row. Florida also earned the top spot for Education Choice, Civic Education, Academic Transparency, and Teacher Freedom. Florida ranked #1 for Education Freedom for the third consecutive year by the ALEC Index of State Education Freedom: A 50 State Guide to Parental Empowerment. The index also ranked Florida #1 for student-centered funding programs, charter schools, and home schooling. The Center for Education Reform also ranked Florida #1 on the Parent Power index for the fourth consecutive year. The Parent Power Index also ranked Florida #1 for Transformational Learning, charter Schools, and choice programs.

  • Oh good! The feds will borrow money to help out tax payers who itemize deductions and who have already been subsidized by the state in it’s efforts to ruin public education. Poorer people don’t need or get tax credits – all their money gets the sales tax.

    • But on the bright side taxpayers may be getting money back soon with no state property taxes. Plus think of all the money saved by the public school system with home schooling and charter schools.i challenge the public school system and along locally with Patton and Certain to show all the mean charter schools and home schoolers how much better their education system and policies are better.

      • Public school infrastructure does not shrink with lost students and the proportion of high cost disabled students they must admit rises. Since the reasonably well off people choosing charters are reimbursed, taxpayers are getting no break, unless you forget about our kids who will inherit the federal debt funding these new tax cuts.

Sales tax cuts is just the state government knee capping local governments again, limiting their ability to govern while accumulating it in Tallahassee. We know how much you like state power Bear, but oters may object when they grasp the con.

        • Don’t forget about the Florida DOGE report coming. The county and city need to be fined for their violations
