Staff report

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. — Governor Ron DeSantis has announced the appointment of Emery Gainey as Sheriff of Alachua County. This appointment is effective October 2, 2023.

Emery Gainey

Gainey was born and grew up in Gainesville. He started his law enforcement career in 1982 with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office. He worked his way up the ranks, eventually becoming Chief Deputy under Sheriff Steve Oelrich. After leaving the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, he worked for the Attorney General’s Office under Attorney General Pam Bondi and left there as Chief of Staff. He was appointed as Sheriff of Marion County by Governor Rick Scott in 2016 and served until the new Sheriff elected in 2016 took office. Gainey earned his associate degree from Santa Fe College and his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Florida.

  • Not so fast my friend! That goes against one of the primary things the liberal lunatics claim about DeSantis.

Congratulations Sheriff Gainey! Hopefully the criminals will find your appointment is not conducive to their continued crimes.

  • He did a great job as an appointed Sheriff in Marion County. Was very upfront and instituted some much needed changes at that agency and then turned it over to Sheriff Woods when he was elected.

Excellent choice for real progress in Alachua County.

  • Well done Ronnie. You couldn’t have picked a better person for the job. He’ll make positive changes at ASO which will benefit the public and employees.

    • Not just the medians–they are in the streets now. Saw a dude at the southbound corner of Archer and 34th St. last night walking in all lanes of traffic with a single water bottle in hand and a sign saying “free water, tips appreciated”.

More accurately, he was stalking menacingly putting his face up to people’s windows and scowling when people who work for a living declined to give this lazy bum a handout.

Seeing bums pop off the median more and more frequently at the northbound lane at the corner of 39th and Waldo Rd. during rush hour, aggressively panhandling. On a positive note it’s been a while since I’ve seen someone give these bums anything but the middle finger. Keep on moving junkies, there’s no crumbs for you here. San Fran is thataway.

  • Welcome back Emery!
Show Clovis how a department is supposed to be run with Respect & Dignity.

    Love you

  • Great Appointment!! Now get rid of the command staff promoted by the former sheriff. Those who stood by and did nothing while the criminal interprize operated Chad, Joe, Jacob, Lance and the rest!!
