Governor Ron DeSantis appoints Janine Plavac to the School Board of Alachua County

Press release from the Office of Governor Ron DeSantis

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Janine Plavac to the School Board of Alachua County.

Janine Plavac

Plavac is the Director of the Health Sciences Institute at St. Francis Catholic High School. Active in her community, she previously served as Chair of the Gainesville High School Advisory Council and the Alachua County Superintendent Search Committee. Plavac earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Miami.

  • She’s a GREAT choice. Excellent teacher and takes no nonsense. She’s got her work cut out for her.

    • I came here to say this exact thing as a St Francis mom. Zero nonsense will be sliding past this lady!!

      • Definitely glad to hear she’s a no-nonsense woman. But I’m CERTAIN that I know exactly who will try, and hate her right off the bat cause DeSantis appointed her.

  • The statute on school board residency reads, “Each elected candidate for district school board member must, by the date she or he assumes office, be a resident of the district school board member residence area from which she or he was elected.”

As an appointed school board member, she can live outside the district. If she decides to run for the seat, she would need to move or run for the seat in the district where she lives.

      • Hmmm! Is your question aimed at the two current BOCC members who lied about their residency to claim homestead exemptions?

        Get over it!

        • I have no idea about what you are talking about. I just don’t think she is legally qualified to represent District 5 since she doesn’t live there.

  • Our daughter attends Saint Francis Academy. She took a class with Ms. Plavic last semester. All she said all semester long: “she’s very strict.” She didn’t complain that she was unfair, or intransigent, difficult, or mean, just “strict.” Translation: this is a no-nonsense teacher who understands that an A is an A and a C is a C. I predict she will call balls and strikes as she sees them. Good luck to the squishes on the Alachua School board. Ms. Plavick is unlikely to be swayed by their mushy arguments. I salute our governors choice.

  • Can’t help but ask which Superintendent she found while on the Search Committee?

If it’s any of the most recent, DeSantis needs to keep looking for a suitable replacement.
