Governor Ron DeSantis receives nine bills from the Florida Legislature

Press release from the Office of Governor Ron DeSantis

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Today, Governor Ron DeSantis received the following bills from the Florida Legislature. The Governor has until March 27, 2024, to act on these bills.

CS/CS/SB 1758 – Individuals with Disabilities

CS/SB 330 – Behavioral Health Teaching Hospitals

CS/CS/SB 1036 – Reclassification of Criminal Penalties

SB 322 – Public Records and Meetings

CS/SB 7016 – Health Care

SB 7018 – Health Care Innovation

HB 1451 – Identification Documents

CS/CS/HB 1365 – Unauthorized Public Camping and Public Sleeping

CS/HB 1589 – Driving Without a Valid Driver License

  • Look at the item “Unauthorized Public Camping and Public Sleeping”. The state may clean up our public property faster than Gainesville or Alachua County ever tried to!

    • It looks like it basically just differentiates between that and existing trespassing laws but it’s up to counties to enforce it

      • The important part is that the bill prohibits cities and counties from allowing public camping / sleeping without a certification from the state govt (Dept. Children and Families). They can’t ignore it or encourage it like they do now.

The counties / cities can apply for such a designation for a specific time period, but again that must be approved by the state (even on county property).

If approved, the county must enforce prohibition on illegal drug and alcohol use. The property can be inspected by the State at any time and the designation can be revoked for not meeting standards.

A resident, business owner, or the state AG can bring a civil court action against the county or city for violating certain sections of the law and recover attorney’s fees, etc.
