GPD investigating Saturday evening death of a UF student hit by a car on University Ave.

Press release from Gainesville Police Department

On January 16, 2021, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Gainesville Police Department (GPD) officers responded to a two-vehicle accident at the 1700 block of West University Avenue. Subsequent investigation revealed a Honda Civic traveling eastbound on West University Avenue and a Honda Accord traveling westbound on West University Avenue, which was attempting to turn south onto NW 17th Street, collided. The Honda Civic then skid sideways, striking a pole and 5 pedestrians. The pedestrians, University of Florida students, along with the driver of the Honda Civic, were transported to local hospitals. Later that evening, one of the pedestrians, Sophia Lambert, a 19-year-old UF student from Miami, passed away due to injuries sustained in the crash.

This incident remains an ongoing investigation to determine the contributing factors that led to the accident. GPD extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Sophia Lambert, who died last evening.

    • Don’t think so… The social can only take so much draconian limitation to open up for business.

  • So tragic….
This is pretty close to where another young UF student was killed just a month or two ago…
We all need to be so alert and careful when driving, especially near campus.
So many people must be grieving, and traumatized from the consequences of this moment of distraction/bad decision…

  • Tragic and a sad loss for the family. Prayers to them and the survivors.
Probably won’t be long before the city idiots attempt to make University Avenue a pedestrian only passage between Eastern and Western Alachua County.
