Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gainesville Police Department is investigating a shooting death at Harpers Pointe Apartments on Sunday.

At about 1 p.m., officers responded to the apartment complex (2320 E. University Ave.) and found one male with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

A person of interest was detained and released after questioning. No arrests have been made, and the department is consulting with the State Attorney’s office about possible charges. This is an open investigation.

  • Another senseless gang crime, most likely. Same sh**, different day in good old GANGsville

    • No it’s a stand your ground incident a argument went wrong and someone lost there life senior citizens

  • Wow. This is the newer senior citizen community in East Gainesville, very nice property. Sounds like a self defense case.

  • Is the SAO putting the cart before the horse?
No arrests have been made, no suspects in custody, but GPD consulting about possible charges already.

I might offer a hint of where to look first – likely the side of town the sun rises moreso than where it sets given recent history.

  • Usually when a firearms case involving a death has occurred and the person (shooter) has not been arrested there is mostly a self defense or stand your ground claim. I hope the citizen that was released has obtained a lawyer not that I wouldn’t trust our state attorney to make the right choice or the sway of public anti gun people to demand charges.

  • Well instead of wasting money on worthless programs and lowering standards. Let’s make GPD the highest paid and educated in the state. Gainesville needs to be a safer city for all.

  • Self-defense should happen more often, until we straighten things out in the courts and city hall (and make salary corrections at GPD).

  • Crazy how when I white person kill a black it’s self defense that white man killed an innocent black man because he was trying to get into the apartment building to visit someone the black man was very known also

    • I didnt know anything about what color someone is. News never mentioned it. The only thing I heard was it was some guy named Blake. Did the black guy live in the at building he was trying to get into? Was he pulling on the doors with force that may HF ave looked like he was breaking in? Are non residents allowed to go into a building unescorted? Obviously he was not that well known to the shooter. There are a lot questions, a lot of unknowns, unless you actually witnessed the shooting you are just going off what people are saying and news accounts.

    • Race bait much? Man trying to strong arm his way into a little old ladies apartment was not trying to visit somebody in a nice way.
When you charge somebody who told you to leave and continue doing so after seeing a gun and being told to stop Darwin takes over.
Yah the guy shot was well known and not in a good way unless you’re one of the drug buddies. Is that you?
