GPD investigating traffic death of 3-year-old

At approximately 6:12 p.m. on February 24, 2021, numerous Gainesville Police Department (GPD) officers responded to a traffic crash involving a 3-year-old child hit by a vehicle at the 4100 block of NE 15th Street.

While crossing NE 15th Street on a toy toddler scooter, the child entered the path of a truck driving southbound and was struck by the vehicle. Two Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Deputies arrived on the scene first and began CPR. GPD officers continued lifesaving efforts until Gainesville Fire Rescue/Alachua County Fire Rescue arrived and took over. The 3-year-old victim was trauma-alerted to Shands under full arrest, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

GPDs Traffic Safety Unit and Detectives continue to work this ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made.
