GPD requests assistance from the public with investigation of unauthorized stop sign near Cabana Beach Apartments

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) requests the public’s help to determine who erected a stop sign at the intersection of SW 52nd Street and 18th Place, near Cabana Beach Apartments. The stop sign caused confusion among motorists, caused significant traffic disruptions, and contributed to unsafe driving behaviors.

The illegal sign was removed Friday night by the City of Gainesville Public Works Department to ensure the safety of all roadway users. GPD shares the concerns of area residents about vehicles failing to stop.

“The removal of the unauthorized stop sign was necessary to maintain clarity and ensure the safety of drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians,” said Brandon Hatzel, GPD Public Information Officer. “We’re investigating this incident and ask for the assistance of the community.”

Anyone with information about who may have installed the stop sign or related activity at this location is urged to contact the Gainesville Police Department at (352) 393-7500.

The City of Gainesville remains committed to ensuring that traffic control devices within Gainesville are properly installed, maintained, and comply with all state and local regulations.

  • I can think of several places around town that need “unauthorized” traffic controls. If GPD still policed traffic then people would not be taking actions on their own. People drive like a$$ and the police doesn’t even bother to police it anymore…. They’re too preoccupied with the mayhem and political optics related to the government housing projects.   • Of all the crime and violence occurring in Gainesville, someone thought a vigilante stop sign was worthy of writing a press release for? Even if GPD identified the person, what would they charge them with?

    When law enforcement fails the community, the community is likely to rise up to protect themselves and properties.
