Press release from Gainesville Police Department

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Gainesville Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying the driver involved in a hit-and-run that occurred on September 1, 2024, in the 1000 block of West University Avenue.

At approximately 2 a.m, two pedestrians were struck by a red sedan traveling eastbound. The collision occurred as the pedestrians attempted to cross the road in a non-crosswalk area. The driver of the sedan failed to stop at the scene, render aid, or provide information, fleeing immediately after the incident.

Both pedestrians sustained serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

We urge anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has any information regarding the red sedan or its driver to come forward. Even the smallest detail could be vital in our investigation.

Community members with information are encouraged to contact the Gainesville Police Department at (352) 955-1818 or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at (352) 372-STOP (7867).

  • It’s safer to cross at crosswalks and not jay walk across the street at 2a.m.

  • “The collision occurred as the pedestrians attempted to cross the road in a non-crosswalk area.”

Imagine that? You can put up all the crosswalks you want but if they’re stupid enough not to use them….?

  • I’ve been meaning the give the police a call about that for six weeks now, but seems like every time I start to pick up the phone, my dealer calls and I never get around to it.
