GPD to conduct high visibility enforcement to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety
Press release from Gainesville Police Department
The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) was recently awarded a $35,000 contract by the Florida Department of Transportation and the Institute of Police Technology to conduct high visibility enforcement details to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety.
This contract will complement GPD’s Gator STEP program, which includes enforcement of traffic and pedestrian laws across Gainesville, as well as education initiatives that focus on techniques to improve safety.
Some of the roadways that will be included in this high visibility enforcement include: University Avenue, NE Waldo Road, SW 34th Street, NE 39th Avenue, Newberry Road, Archer Road, and SW 62nd Boulevard.
The goal of this enforcement effort is to increase awareness of and compliance with traffic laws that protect the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists. Enforcement efforts will focus primarily on education of drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Violations may result in warnings or citations, depending on the circumstances.
Weekly Gator STEP data
GPD also released its weekly Gator STEP data today.
The following data reflects citations, warnings, and tickets issued by the Gainesville Police Department on West University Avenue from March 8-15, 2021. This data is part of GPD’s Gator STEP (Special Traffic Enforcement Program).
GPD continues to focus its efforts on West University Avenue from 34th Street to 13th Street.
If any of our neighbors have ideas or questions they’d like to share with GPD concerning Gator STEP, please feel free to contact us at: gpdpio@cityofgainesville.org
Hope they use their optical senses to actually see the highly “visible” offenses being committed by distracted drivers.
They are usually quite evident. Most, when stopped at a traffic signal, will stop with an excessive distance between themselves and the vehicle in front of them.
Address the issue, don’t penalize many because of the few.
