Greater Gainesville International Center welcomes first two refugee families

Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – According to a newsletter sent out by the Greater Gainesville International Center (GGIC), the first refugee family arrived within the past week, and the second family is arriving tomorrow.
The first family is from Afghanistan. According to the newsletter: “As a former woman journalist, the mother was living under threat of violence by the Taliban. Their children were no longer [able] to attend school. They were under constant threat of bombings and shootings. Now, they join us to restart their lives and realize their full potential as human beings.”
The second family is from Guatemala and is “a family of four with an eleven-year-old daughter and four-year-old son. They too are fleeing extreme violence and cultural oppression.”
The effort to bring refugee families to Gainesville was announced in May; the families are reportedly vetted by the federal government before being granted refugee status. GGIC finds affordable housing for the families, and they immediately have a visa to work and are eligible for SNAP and other benefits.

Poe must be sooooo proud. Of course, he still doesn’t have a job
Why not locate both families at Poe’s house! He can love and nurture the wife and kids while teaching the adult males how to get easy income and free stuff without working. I wonder why he never pursued that Economics degree he falsely claimed he had as Mayor (history BA only)? He’s got plenty of time? Maybe the DEC or Queen P will pay for his schooling. Together, if they try hard, Poe and his boy Adrian Hayes (falsely claimed to be minority -Hispanic) might be able to run a doughnut shop after some training. To think the nutty DEC would back either of those two is pure idiocy! Botcher always botches any effort she champions/fails at.
You don’t need an Economics degree to mooch.
And so it begins…
Let’s hope they don’t all end up working in the back of Poe’s food trucks that he supervises, making $3 or $4 an hour.
Do People have to be beyond irgnorant and spiteful to qualify for Gainesville City , County, District 22 and 20 Democrats. I am tired of losing with these commies.
You can move to Dixie county
Just great…our tax dollars paying for illegal alien criminal. Nothing to celebrate.
easy, do not pay taxes, or move out
“Cultural oppression”? You mean what conservatives suffer in Gainesville?
Home run…….NO…..grandslam!
In other words, both are illegal and sucking on the taxpayer teat. Does either have someone who speaks English? Great job, Mayor Harvey Ward. How about some focus on the needs of the community, instead of your pet projects?
The city and county had no role in this iirc. This is the feds and an NGO. Happy to be corrected though if I’m wrong
That money runs out at a certain point. Like 6 months or less. That’s why they want to send them here, probably.
The Feds don’t pay the welfare and SNAP (Food Stamps). Not sure about the free health care.
Not our fault you speaks only one language…you still can go to school.
Your taxpayer money being spent to relocate people when local government can’t even take care of our own veterans and repair the roads.
Let the homeless invade the City while importing other people and subsidizing them.
Time to sell and move out…how much you want for your house?
Don’t forget all our climate change refugees at Grace Marketplace….
These international NGOs like this one have fundamentally broken Europe imo. They believe in borderless 1 world government ruled by unelected elites (WEF, WHO, etc)
Come on man. These families are fleeing extreme violence and political oppression. What is your problem?
Say if these people were hot models fleeing an eastern European country, zero problem.
Italians, Irish, .. every immigrant group has faced this same BS.
Indeed.
“How are refugees screened and approved?
The U.S. State Department, in consultation with a constellation of other agencies and organizations, manages the process through its refugee admission program, USRAP. The first step for a potential refugee abroad is most often to register with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). UNHCR officials collect documentation and perform an initial screening and then refer qualifying individuals to State Department Resettlement Support Centers (RSCs), of which there are seven around the world. Sometimes this referral is done by a U.S. embassy or a nongovernmental organization.
Then, RSC officials interview the applicants, verify their personal data, and submit their information for background checks by a suite of U.S. national security agencies. These security checks [PDF] include multiple forms of biometric screening, such as cross-checks of global fingerprint databases and medical tests.
If none of these inquiries produce problematic results, including criminal histories, past immigration violations, connections to terrorist groups, or communicable diseases, the applicant can be cleared for entry to the United States. The entire admissions process generally takes between eighteen months and two years to complete…
Do refugee populations pose security risks to the United States?
Out of the more than three million refugees accepted by the United States over the past four decades, a handful have been implicated in terrorist plots. According to a 2019 study by the libertarian-leaning CATO Institute, of the 192 foreign-born terrorists who committed attacks in the United States between 1975 and 2017, 25 were refugees. Of these attacks, only three proved deadly, and all three took place before 1980, when the Refugee Act created the current screening procedures.”

Jazzy, Biden doesn’t follow the immigration law. Neither did Obama.
So…are you a FED consultant? or just a guy with big imagination?…
Tell us how Roger and who paid for the “wall”.
Then try to justify Trump killing the recent immigration law primarily written by Sen Langford of Oklahoma and endorsed by the border guard union because he didn’t want solutions, he wanted campaign slogans. The bill included more guards, more processors for asylum seekers, and fentanyl detection equipment. The bill was the 1st bipartisan legislation on immigration since 2013 (also killed by Republicans) and was asked for by GOP House and Senate leaders until Trump axed it – and he admitted he killed it.
To answer your first question, because it is the law to NOT include those two items as legitimate reasons to enter the US legally. The immigrant groups you refer to didn’t get ANY government support, at any level. They required a sponsor who was responsible for them. These ‘families’ are in the country illegally
Another bleeding heart, let the stay in your house, and you feed and cloth them.
My solution has always been, give these people a copy of our Constitution, an AR 15 and a Bible. Now go fight for your country. If you won’t fight for your country, then how do we know you will fight for ours.
“give these people a copy of our Constitution, an AR 15 and a Bible” Most Americans don’t have a copy of the constitution or a Bible. Some have an AR 15, yet they wouldn’t fight for America.
WTF does “They too are fleeing extreme violence and cultural oppression” mean and how is that a LEGAL immigration factor?
Dem cities suffer from that too. Should they go to Europe now, hint hint? 🙏🏻🙏🏿🙏🏾
Please give them jobs fixing the roads.
REALLY, WE CANNOT EVEN IRON OUT OUR OWN PROBLEMS IN THIS COUNTRY, YET, WE BELIEVE WE CAN TAKE CARE OF FOREIGNER’S PROBLEMS, HOW CRASS CAN WE GET, ESPECIALLY IN GAINESVILLE FL.
And who is paying for the affordable housing and other benefits???? The long winded sermon on background checks is a bunch of baloney. Background checks in Guatemala and Afghanistan????? Hardy Har Har.
